Mintier Lines - S03 - Hammond ========== HAMMOND (Much of this material is quoted from a Genealogy or Robert Hammond, written by John Walter Watson in 1949.) Sir Robert Fitzhamon, scion of a great family of Normandy, was the founder of the Hammond family in the British Isles. The affix "Fitz" is a Norman-French corruption of the Latin "Filius," meaning son. Sir Robert's descendants in the British Isles early took the name Hamon and later Hammond. With the army of conquest when Duke William of Normandy invaded England in an attempt to seize the crown Sir Robert Fitzhamon crossed the English Channel. In recognition of his service (1066) to Duke William he was made the Earl of Gloucester and he is buried in the great Benedictine Abbey in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. In the following centuries the Hammonds are named as medical doctors, ministers, writers, and a Robert Hammond was sent to Ireland to reorganize the Judicial System. Almost two hundred year later we have the record of the birth of William John Hammond in 1832 at Grove Hill, Moira, County Down, Ireland. The Encyclopedia of Biography of Pennsylvania, Vol. 25, records that the Hammond family for a long time resided in Scotland, but also had a long history in England and Ireland. We begin our immediate Hammond history with Richard Hammond, born in County Down, Ireland in 1765. He was of Scotch origin; his ancestors were soldiers in William the Conqueror's and Cromwell's armies. In the early 1780's he came to America and purchased a farm some two and one-half miles southeast of Hickory, Washington County, Penna., probably near Westland, from Samuel and Elizabeth Agnew in 1797. He came on to Ohio in 1809 where he purchased 110 acres from Jacob and Barbary Coon in 1811. This farm was located about one mile north of Fairpoint, Ohio. It was left to his youngest son, James Hammond, who in turn transferred it to John Watson. In 1970 it was owned a operated by James M. Watson, great-great-great grandson of Robert Hammond. Robert Hammond was a charter member of the Unity Seceder Church, later the Unity United Presbyterian Church, organized in 1813, and he was one of the original elders of that church. Robert Hammond (my great-great grandfather) married Jane Cassell (sometimes spelled Cassill or Cassil) who was also born in County Down, Ireland in 1764 of Scotch ancestry. Her forbears, likewise fought under Cromwell. Evidently Robert and Jane met in Washington county, Penna. where records indicate a family of her name owning a farm near the Hammond farm. Ten children were born to them. Robert Hammond died in 1845 and Jane in 1852. Both are buried in Unity Cemetery, Belmont County, Ohio. Their sixth child, Elizabeth, was born near Hickory in 1797. She married Robert Mintier, my great grandfather, and they were the parents of twelve children. She died in 1863 and is buried beside her husband in Unity Cemetery. In 1962 friends took me to Moira, county Down, Ireland. We stopped at the first filling station we saw in the small town and I asked if there were any Hammonds in Moira. The red-haired young man said that was his name. I told him I was a Hammond from the States who was hoping to find out something more about by forbears there. He called his father who said he knew little, but if only his sister were 2. there she could help me. She was in Belfast. He told me to go to the church on the little hill just at the edge of town and I would find many Hammond graves in the graveyard. Those on the left side of the church were the most recent Hammonds, he said, and those on the right side the earlier ones, but he warned me that I would probably be unable to read the inscriptions on the stones. I was not able to find one that would give me a clue to my early grandparents. The little church was Church of Ireland. It was locked but the caretaker opened it with the largest doorkey I have ever seen. The pews had doors on them and the who church reminded me of the earliest ones we have in America.
