Mintier Lines - S04 - Henderson ========== HENDERSON Most family historians of the Henderson family agree that about the year 1740 three brothers, John, William and Alexander came from Fordell, Scotland to America and located on Owl Creek near what is now Alexandria, Virginia. Soon afterwards John went to Cumberland County, Penna. (That county as it was then has been divided into what is now Franklin, Fulton, Bedford and Cumberland counties.) John located three miles from Upper Strasburg - not far from Shippensburg. Later, William went to Lancaster, Penna. and Alexander to Albemarle County, Virginia and later to Fleming County, Kentucky. One source says that these three were undoubtedly the sons of Alexander Henderson (not the famous theologian Alexander) of Fordell whose family consisted of at least William, born 1707, married to (Agnes) Kearns; Alexander, married to Jean ___________; John born 1719; Daniel and a daughter Anna. In notes (found by A. Y. Henderson of Ashland, Ohio) from a Juniata County, Penna. History: "William and Agnes Henderson came to Lost Creek in 1758. Two sons, James and John, and daughter, Agnes were born in America." Traditions from different segments of the Henderson tribe say that all three brothers fought in the Revolution and were disinherited by their father for fighting against the mother country. William Henderson (1707- ) (of the three brothers) was my great-great-great grandfather. The account in the Nichol history stays he was born in Ireland; the foregoing account intimates in Scotland. As many families did, this family may have left Fordell, Scotland for Ireland; the sons may have been born there; and then have come to America. William Henderson evidently spent some time near Alexandria, Va., in Lancaster County, Penna., and in Juniata County, Penna. (Lost Creek). The Nichol family history says he bought land from the government near Mifflintown, Penna. (Juniata County) in 1763. (The foregoing source says he came to Juniata County in 1758.) He married Agnes Kearns (at least that seems to have been her name). John Henderson, my great-great grandfather, the second son of William and Agnes, was born in 1747, according to a Juniata County, Penna. history. He was "a soldier in the armies of George Washington," according to the Nichol History. He married Martha Long (1754-1829), daughter of Thomas and Mary Long. In the recorder's office in Lewiston, Mifflin Co., Penna. a deed reads: "Whereas, John Henderson and Martha his wife stat(s) seized of two certain tracts; the first called CONTENTMENT - 225 acres; the second called HEMPFIELD - 105 acres." This deed is dated Jan. 1804. The land was about three miles from Mifflintown. In 1804 he and his wife settled in Belmont County, Ohio where he purchased from the government Section 27 in Wheeling Township. From this section the plot was secured for the Unity Associate (later United) Presbyterian Church (now removed) and for the Unity Union Cemetery. The central part of the land on which John Henderson had built the first hewed-log house in the community descended to his youngest son Andrew (my great grandfather). To this house in 1819 Andrew brought his young bride, Jennet Nichol. Their fifth child, Mary Jane, was my grandmother Mintier. 2. The John Hendersons (he died in 1814; she in 1829) are buried at the Old Taggart Cemetery near Lafferty, Ohio. The Andrew Hendersons and the John Mintiers are buried at the Unity Cemetery. Grandmother lived with us a year or more when we lived at Espyville Station, Penna. in 1905-1908, so I remember her at that time. She died in her 80th year as a result of being thrown out of a buggy when the horse became frightened. She died in the home of Rev. W. G. Waddle, her pastor at Unity Church, to whose home she was going at the time of the accident. Her nephew, Fay Henderson, later missionary in Egypt, was driving. The John Henderson farm, I believe, is now in the possession of Thomas Lyle Henderson of St. Clairsville, a great-great grandson of John.
