General Information

Handwriting Analysis

  • Deciphering Old Handwriting - Handwriting is one of the biggest "bug-a-boos" when attempting to read old-time (pre-computer!) records, especially census records. Sometimes, it seems the enumerator was attempting to write as fancily as he could, and other times, it seems like all they wanted to do was get it done and over with. Use this site to better understand it all.
  • US Census Records - Handwriting - Before you start looking at handwritten images, it might be a good idea (even if you CAN read bad and fancy "cursive" handwriting) to check this site out. It has quite a number of examples of handwriting and abbreviations used in handwritten records.

Tools

  • Forms and Charts - from ABCGenealogy.com
  • Census Tools Electronic Spreadsheets - Written using Microsoft Excel 97, these spreadsheets are "... formatted to faithfully match the actual census for each year." The designer allows download for free (name and email address equested) and, "If you receive it from me directly, from a friend, or via this download page and find it a useful tool, I ask that you consider making a small donation of $10 to my address or online." I think that you WILL find them useful.

Other Info/Stuff

  • Fun Stuff for Genealogists, Inc. - An online store with bunches of genealogical "stuff", including key rings, clip art, historic maps, mugs, clothing, etc. Check it out. The LINKS page contains many genealogical links.
  • PetuniaPress - "Home of MISSING LINKS: A Magazine for Genealogists and SOMEBODY'S LINKS: Genealogical Treasures Found" - Have you "rescued" old bibles, records, yearbooks, jewelry, etc. from flea markets?... Secondhand stores?... Pawn shops?... Garage sales?... Your own attic/basement? ... and want to get them to the descendants of the original owner? It is possible that YOUR ancestor's books, bibles, records, etc. are out there in some some flea market, secondhand store, etc. (You get the idea, and MIGHT be surprised!) This site and its associated newsletters are dedicated to helping those old objects and records find their families. The stories of how some of these records are found are interesting, too.
  • Higginson Book Company ($$) - Publishers of Genealogy, Local History, Civil War Books and Historic Maps for purchase.
  • IUniverse ($$) - "Only iUniverse gives you a truly customized self-publishing experience."
  • Your Past Connections - "... since 1996, [this site] has been helping people around the world locate lost original items and memorabilia from their family's past. This is a free service."
