Something about which all job searchers should be aware: There are plenty of internet "trolling" 'bots (robots - think automatic scanners), searching for email addresses (and, in some cases, other identifiable information), out there in Internet-land.

If you are worried about your privacy, there are ways to protect it. One suggestion that I took to heart was to create a special "email" for my job search using a free Hotmail address. Other places to get free email addresses abound, one of the better-known being Yahoo. While it gives me another email account with which to deal, it is much easier to "turn off" than my main email account.

Also, if you put your resume into your own webpage like I did, it might be prudent to use a script (I used a JavaScript) to "build" the mailto link. It's still "clickable" for those that actually visit the site, but the trollers can't find it. Some people "disguise" their email links with the words "nospam" or other contrivances embedded in the email address. This makes it more difficult (and therefore, less likely to be used) for visitors, but it is a viable alternative.

Job-Hunter's Guides and Resources

  • Job Hunter's Bible - Companion site ("supplement", by the author's description) to "The 2003 edition of What Color is Your Parachute". (Advice, information and links to link pages of Job Sites -- even to some of the sites listed below.)
  • Career Resumes - "... the largest resume writing firm in the United States... ...one of the premier resume services available." (Information about resume writing, career links, etc.)
  • America's Career Kit - CareerOneStop portal from the Department of Labor, is a federal-state partnership, and is funded by grants to states. It provides a suite of tools, that "... offers a unique solution to the overwhelming demands of today's labor market from the perspective of the job seeker, the employer, and the public workforce community." This is a  National site.
    • America's Job Bank - "... the biggest and busiest job market in cyberspace." On the left side of the page, follow the instructions in the "JobSeekers" section. NOTE: Also listed under General Boards/National and/or International.
    • America's Career InfoNet - Designed to help you "... make better, more informed career decisions." "Find wages and employment trends, occupational requirements, state by state labor market conditions, millions of employer contacts nationwide, and the most extensive career resource library online."
    • America's Service Locator - "... free of charge ... directs customers to a range of services available in their area: unemployment benefits, job training, youth programs, seminars, education opportunities, disabled or older worker programs and much, much more."
  • Indiana Gateway of America's Service Locator - State career information from the federal and state Departments of Labor. Select the function you want to perform, and click the "dot" on the map closest to your location. The service locator gives you information about Indiana itself, and the Department of WorkForce Development offices, including phone lists, what's available at each brick-and-mortar site, etc. Also contains the DWD link, below.
  • Job Star Central - What started as "a federally funded project to serve Northern California", this site has lots of Job Search information, California-specific Job Searches, and National (see CareerJournal, below) and International (through the Wall Street Journal for Asia and Europe, and the FarEastern Economic Review) job boards.

Resume Services
(on-line information or free)

These sites contain samples and information needed to write your resumes. (Don't use mine as an example, though I used an MS Word Template as a basis for both my Word version and "Clean" version resumes. These sites suggest other formats that may be much more effective.)

  • The Resume Guide - Lots of resume, cover letter, and thank-you samples, examples, suggestions and reasons for those suggestions. Also a resume writing, career counseling and job search coaching services, CDs to buy, etc. Spend some time exploring.
  • Hot Resumes - While this site also includes a job search, the free resume posting allows you to post your resume to a number of sites at one time: Recruiters Online; Employmax; 123Hire; ComputerWork; Free Resume Critique Leads; and Job.com. You can also submit your resume, and receive FREE information about getting your MBA through Cardean University. They also connect to ResumeZapper, a premium service that sends your resume to numerous other sites.

General Boards

These sites list job-search resources, employers and jobs, many searchable by location, position type, etc.  Please note that many of the pages with links contain duplicates and/or may link to different places in the site to which they point. Also note that a number of job boards contain duplicate position requests. This does not mean to ignore positions that appear to be duplicates -- sometimes they are not. Be sure to check them out. Many of the following also allow you to store your resume and/or fill out an application which can be used when you find a job to which you wish to apply. Many also allow you to enter "Scout" information, which uses your job search criteria and sends email to your account, periodically.

National and/or International

  • Career Resources Homepage - Links to literally hundreds of employers, commercial job search, and many other job-seekers sites. (While it appears not to have been updated since 2000, it's really worth reviewing!)
  • America's Job Bank - Part of America's Career Kit - "... the biggest and busiest job market in cyberspace." On the left side of the page, follow the instructions in the "JobSeekers" section. NOTE: This link is a repeat of a link, above.
  • Monster - One of the nation's leading job boards - "With the best job search tools and career advice on the planet ..." (So well-known, even MSN uses it! If you've searched for jobs, you will find the Monster button, or "Powered by Monster" all over the place.)
  • HotJobs - "... a Yahoo! service, which combines the best features of HotJobs and Yahoo! Careers." (You need a Yahoo! Id -- not a Yahoo! email account, if you don't want one -- to access HotJobs, but it is as good, if not better in some ways, to others.)
  • TrueCareers - "... a national, leading career site bringing professional, degreed candidates and the companies that value them together."
  • CareerBuilder - It's mission is "to leverage the newspaper classified business to create the fastest growing, most profitable job board in the industry." (You will find that many of the larger newspapers' Employment Classifieds can be found here. I was only looking in the Central Indiana area, but now that Gannett Co., Inc., Knight Ridder and Tribune Company have become equal partners, and CareerBuilder.com will power the career channel on USATODAY.com, they should be nationwide, if not now, then shortly (03/16/2003). Enter search criteria on this page.
  • Vault - "... the Internet's ultimate destination for insider company information, advice, and career management services" and quot; The Most Trusted Name in Career Information." (An abundance of information about companies, industries, career guides, employer profiles, etc.)
  • NationJob - "Ease of access, skill-matching agent capability that really works, and local connections keep this site on top."
  • JobVillage - "... the biggest little site on the net!" (Enter Search Criteria on Home Page. Leave out keywords for more.)
  • Jobvertise - "The worlds largest FREE job and resume database!"
  • Dice - "... the #1 Technology job board!"
  • Career Journal (from the Wall Street Journal) - "... the Internet's premier free site for executives." "... Positions featured include senior and general management, sales, marketing, finance, technology and a range of related fields." This site also contains research information about publicly traded companies who post on Career Journal. It also has a lot of other career-oriented information.

Recruiters/Headhunters

  • Dunhill Staffing Systems - Corporate Home Page
  • Management Recruiters International - Corporate Home Page (It appears that each recruiter in each office has their own set of job postings, so offices I found in Indy are listed below. Note: Some of those offices that are not in Indy have Indianapolis jobs, too.)
    • Brownsburg/NW Indianapolis - Home Page (Click "Job Search" button in right link bar, and select "IN" (Indiana) jobs.)
    • Carmel/N Indianapolis - Home Page (Click on your selected "Industry". Click on each recruiter that is displayed. In each of those pages, there should be a "View Jobs" button; click it.)
    • Central Indianapolis - Home Page (Choose your industry in the drop-down menu, and follow the links.)
    • Noblesville/NE Indianapolis (Job Centers lists jobs -- no selection criteria -- so you will need to use the browser's FIND (Control-F) function, and enter "Indiana")
  • Recruiters Online Network - "... provides online resumes, job listings and recruiting resources for employment agencies, headhunters, and staffing services. Our extensive job bank allows job seekers to search thousands of career opportunities."

Links to Links upon Links

This section contains links to pages that for the most part contain links of other places to search for a job.

  • Orange Frog Productions Hometown Links - Ok... I am touting my own page, but this was one of the reasons I created that page in the first place. It started when I was looking for all the websites in the Lebanon Business Park to see what types of jobs they had available and grew from there. Check it out.
  • EZDozen Jobs Online - A "portal" of sorts, that lists what they consider to be the top dozen (12) Job-Search sites on the Internet. (Some of the General Boards, below, are listed, but, there are others.)
  • Google Search - Business > Employment > by Industry - If you know Google, you know each industry listed will contain numerous links to Job Boards and other pages like this one. Lots of places to look!
  • ABYZ News Links - Indiana - "Your Gateway to Newspapers, News Media, and News Sources [in] INDIANA" - Find one of the newspapers in the area of the state in which you are interested, click to go to their site, and search the classifieds for Jobs, Employment or Business Opportunities. Please note that many of the larger papers' online sites use CareerBuilder (see National section of General Boards on this page), while some of the smaller ones use "Hoosier Buy Classifieds". CareerBuilder will be the same for the same selected cities for all of these papers, and Hoosier Buy Classifieds will be different for each paper.

Other Job-Related Links
including Individual Businesses

This group contains individual businesses and other links in the Central Indiana (Indianapolis to Lafayette) area where I, personally, am/was looking for a position. (Remember, I am a programmer, so these may be more IS/IT/MIS related.)

Please don't think that these and those above are/were the only boards and businesses to which I am/was paying close attention, or that you should, either! I just didn't list them all here. If I did, this would be a complete job portal, and that was not my intent with these pages.

Must "join" and pay to use

  • iHireProgrammers - "Programming Professionals Job Search and Resume Posting Service FREE To Candidates" - "... specializes in the following Programming positions: Project Manager, Programming Team Lead, Programmer" (joined)
  • Emoonlighter - "... the ultimate resource for businesses to find top freelance and contract talent, even in their own local area. Emoonlighter's web-based marketplace directly connects businesses with talented freelancers who specialize in four professional categories:
