This piece was inspired by the email, making the rounds at this time, entitled "American Flag v Mexican Flag". The email was taken from a website (cited in the Rumors section), and a comment was "thrown in":
American Flag v
Mexican Flag
(This opens a new browser window. Simply close to return
here.)
To be totally honest, I'm a little concerned that maybe I shouldn't put these comments on this site. However, I've said some of the following before. See my comments at:
Very
Thought Provoking (Dick Lamm - How to Destroy America)
and my opinion piece at Immigrant-Americans
The difference here is that it appears that I am speaking only to the illegal Mexican immigrants. While this appears to be the case, please understand that what I'm saying below holds true for ALL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS in this country.
It's just that the above piece, some of the feedback, and the protests that have already happened and those that are planned have illegal Mexican immigrants "top-of-mind" at the moment.
Oh... And remember also, while I am expressing my OPINION (which I'm LEGALLY allowed to do, being a citizen of the United States of America), that does not mean I condone any illegal actions, nor any acts that cause any damage to people or property by either side.
To All Illegal Immigrants in America
I don't understand. You come to America, not to simply visit and return home, but to live here, and you don't want to be an American?
Some will remember the old bumper-stickers, years ago -- "America - Love It or Leave It".
If you don't like the way you are treated here... If you don't like being called "American" -- not Mexican-American, Hispanic-American, Cuban-American, Spanish-American, Chinese-American, Asian-American, African-American, or one of many other combinations of a country/people and "American" -- but just AMERICAN) then go back home.
If you want to become an American Citizen, become one... Learn English... It's one of the most-used languages in the world... Learn our laws... They aren't the same as the country from which you came... Learn OUR customs and history (we have well over 200 years of it), learn our religions (there are many - join any you want), etc. That's what made America from the beginning.
Our assimilation of the many cultures and religions of the world show that we are willing to take in almost anyone. America was begun by those being persecuted for their religious beliefs. We have, by now, accepted people of every country of the world, including our enemies' countries. That's why we have the nickname of "the Melting Pot". HOWEVER, the vast majority of those who have come before have tried to "fit in", learning OUR language (English - sounds different in different areas, but it's still English), learning the differences between our country and theirs, and adjusting to our way. NEVER have we adjusted to them... it has always been them to us. Local areas of the country became destinations for certain peoples, sure, but not at the expense of us changing our language or the way we taught, governed, etc.
If you don't like it here, why do you insist on staying here in the first place? Hmmm?
DO NOT carry around signs saying that California, New Mexico, Texas, etc. were STOLEN from your people. They were either PURCHASED or WON in wars years ago. The only reason I can see for your bringing anything like that up now, is because you are here ILLEGALLY and for some reason believe that if enough people believe you, they'll just go, "OH! Sorry... Stay... Stay!" While some might, don't count on the majority saying this based on your signs!
I hope you all realize that America is one of the few countries in the world in which you can protest this way. In many countries you would be castigated (more so than you are now), jailed, beaten to within an inch of your life, or simply put to death.
Until Americans started protesting about the illegal immigrants in this country, and congress and the administration decided to actually start doing something about it -- other than to watch them SNEAK into this country and take hundreds of thousands of jobs from LEGAL AMERICAN people (because people can pay you MUCH less than actual Americans) -- everything was just "hunky-dory".
Now that the whole country is paying attention, and the government is threatening action (even with the possibility of giving amnesty, allowing many or most to become citizens and STAY here), you protest?
And the protest is not going to work for a day, not buying anything for a day, and boycotting school?
I understand that the idea is to show how the American Economy will be affected by your not working or buying anything, but not going to school? Isn't part of the reason you are here is because our schools are better than those in Mexico? So... Your student get a day out of school, probably gets an unexcused absence, possibly misses tests (and since the school-year is near the end, probably FINAL tests, which count MORE toward a final grade), and then you will be complaining that your student has to remain in the same grade for another year. How does that help your cause?
Oh, and DON'T get pissed off if you miss work and 1) don't get paid for the day, or 2) get fired. That's what happens... Employers hire people who are DEPENDABLE, which apparently you were before this came up.
Look... If you want to be an American, do it right.
No one here has problems with people who:
- come to America "through immigration channels" - getting permission to be here and all the proof of that legally
- work hard (no problems there, apparently)
- try to do the right thing (and being here illegally is not the right thing)
- pay INCOME taxes (which you don't when you get paid in cash ... and how can you pay taxes without a LEGAL Social-Security Number?)
- follow the laws (most of them... speeding and parking notwithstanding - those are more forgivable)
- try to speak English (including the National Anthem!)
We have problems with those of you who:
- came here illegally (If you had to SNEAK, bypassing border guards - through some tunnel, swimming the river, climbing over a fence; were brought here in a panel-truck under or behind produce/clothing/whatever; saved up your money and paid some asshole your life-savings to cram you or a bunch of you in a trunk of a car, truck, boat, airplane, etc. to get you here; IT WAS ILLEGAL)
- are willing to live in what most Americans consider "dumps" or "slums" (but which apparently are much better than you lived in in Mexico - and don't bitch about your living conditions... if you are here illegally...)
- use our welfare (which is needed for AMERICAN CITIZENS)
- don't even ATTEMPT to register to become an AMERICAN CITIZEN
- don't vote in any elections (because you aren't registered - and btw: if you can't/don't vote, don't bitch about the government!)
- work for less than the minimum wage, as long as it's paid in cash (so you don't have to pay taxes on it), taking jobs from AMERICAN CITIZENS who NEED them to get off welfare, some of them your own people who came here legally
- are continually watching over your shoulder for immigration authorities
- don't pay taxes (Hell, we get upset that some of our richest people pay less taxes than we do, and we make MUCH less than they do... And we ABHOR those that DON'T pay taxes - ask Willie Nelson!)
- try to make us change to fit you rather than you change to fit us (ENGLISH, not SPANISH - and change the National Anthem? You're kidding, right?)
This bears repeating: If you don't like it here, why did you sneak in, why are you willing to work for shit-pay, live in what many consider to be shacks, send your kids to our schools, use our welfare? And, if you don't like it here, why haven't you gone home? Hell... A lot of our factories are now there!
Become an American the right way. Don't bitch if you have to go back to the country from which you came for a while to do so. You've had your "try before you buy" time. If you like it here better than there, do it right. (This does not include those who are "political refuges", as are many immigrants from Cuba.)
All this having been said --
To the American Public and authorities:
You MUST be very careful about the way this is handled. There are American Citizens who will be protesting along with the illegal immigrants, because some of the illegals are family or friends. There are also many American Citizens (former Mexican, Cuban, Spanish, etc.) who do not attend the protests and do not believe the illegals should be granted the status they believe they should. And there are those who have children who were born here. Remember that those born here are American Citizens, no matter if their parents were legal or not. The latter families will need to be treated differently from individuals and families without children who are illegal. DO NOT blame ALL peoples from (Hispanic, Chicano, Latino, Spanish, South American - whatever you want to call them - backgrounds) - while there are millions of illegals in this country, there are millions who are here LEGALLY.
Do NOT pull the knee-jerk reactions like many had toward those of Arabic and Middle-Eastern descent, and those who were Muslims following the 9/11/2001 attacks. (I recall a woman who had lived here as a legal citizen for 30 years, being harassed physically by young American men; and other stories of 2nd-generation Americans being harassed, if not beaten.)
NO ONE - legal or illegal - deserves being treated this way unless they are themselves violent.
And THAT being said --
To the protestors - legal or otherwise:
Peaceful protest is tolerated, for the most part, in this country. While normally requiring permissions to be granted by the local authorities, most understand why this is impossible in THIS case. If you wish to protest, do NOT INFLAME the locals by burning or desecrating American Flags, peoples' and public properties, etc. DO NOT burn tires, cars, businesses, homes, etc. DO NOT vandalize property. You MAY be damaging/burning the properties of someone who may be sympatric to your cause. You may also cause injury or worse to someone.
If this happens, it's on you. And no matter my and others' comments on knee-jerk reactions, the "law of retaliation" says that if you hurt someone I love, I hurt you. You will NOT be doing your cause any good.
The flag-situation noted at the beginning of this page was a very bad idea. As you can see by the comments of others (in the original email, before mine and in the original article), it alone may have derailed your cause. It, at the very least, derailed the protest occurring when it happened. (That and the violence that occurred.) Many people who may have been sympatric, are not, anymore.
Those signs about how America "STOLE" land from your people, about how YOU are indigent people, about... (You get the idea?) will lose you more supporters than they will gain you.
If you don't like being treated like 2nd-class citizens (uh... you have to be a CITIZEN to be treated as a 2nd-class one), then do it the right way.
Do whatever it takes legally, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually to BECOME AN AMERICAN.
Follow-Up Notes:
Ya know? As much as I can see the problem (see above), I DO NOT understand things like THIS:
Now someone has made up statistics to "show how bad" the illegal Mexican immigrants are for California.
From (a former Orange County Deputy Sheriff).
Hey guys, I thought you'd be interested in some of these facts I got at work today.
It appears that the Immigration March in Los Angeles was a success! According to data from the Los Angeles County Sheriff, Los Angeles had a reduction in the following:
- 82% reduction - auto theft
- 28% " " - murders/ violent crimes/ rapes
- 73% " " - vandalism / tagging
- 54% " " - drug related offenses
(not including the
area surrendering the march) - 31% " " - domestic violence cases
- 64% " " - misdeameanor cases
- (shop lifting, etc.)
- California Highway Patrol reported that today was a record low in the least amount of traffic accidents on South CA freeways.
[NOTE: Stats in Fixed Font (Courier New) to make them line up -bs]
Looks like the immigration rally was well worth it.
Maybe we can do this one again sometime.
Sure saves the State of California a chunk of money!
Take care.

Being an IMMIGRANT (legal or otherwise) to a new country is difficult enough, and there's a possibility that with the millions of ILLEGAL immigrants in California there MAY be a reduction in some statistics. In fact, that's what they were hoping ... to "show America" their "economic effect." But to make them up? Come on!
Reading the Snopes article, it appears that the original quote is a joke (something like one of the late-night comics/hosts would have said for a laugh. It's a "throw-away" line, commenting on the situation. Someone sent it out in email... someone else added a (false) attribution, and someone else, somewhere down the road decided they could use it as "political fodder" or FALSE PROPAGANDA.
Whether they were the ones who put the ironic/sarcastic comments at the end or not, no one knows.
I'll just say that to me it appears that racial hatred is alive and well in "the Melting Pot" of America. It needs to be stamped out as surely as ILLEGAL immigration.

[Keep the following in mind. This is the way many Americans view the illegal (Mexican) immigrant situation. This is another email I received. It doesn't need verification, it's just KNOWN that what it says is true. -LE]
TRY THIS IN MEXICO ...
Every American should get a copy of the e-mail!
And it is not even a joke!!!!!!
I got this and it is soooooooo true.
***
If you are ready for the adventure of a lifetime, TRY THIS:
- Enter Mexico illegally. Never mind immigration quotas, visas, international law, or any of that nonsense.
- Once there, demand that the local government provide free medical care for you and your entire family.
- Demand bilingual nurses and doctors.
- Demand free bilingual local government forms, bulletins, etc. Procreate abundantly.
- Deflect any criticism of this allegedly irresponsible reproductive behavior with, "It is a cultural U.S.A. thing. You would not understand, pal."
- Keep your American identity strong. Fly Old Glory from your rooftop, or proudly display it in your front window or on your car bumper.
- Speak only English at home and in public and insist that your children do likewise.
- Demand classes on American culture in the Mexican school system.
- Demand a local Mexican driver license. This will afford other legal rights and will go far to legitimize your unauthorized, illegal, presence in Mexico
- Drive around with no liability insurance and ignore local traffic laws.
- Insist that local Mexican law enforcement teach English to all its officers.
Good luck! You'll be demanding for the rest of time or soon be dead. Because it will never happen. It will not happen in Mexico or any other country in the world except right here in the United States, Land of the naive and stupid, idiotic politically correct politicians.
If you agree, pass it on. If you don't, go ahead and try the above in Mexico or Iraq.
The only delineated items I have a problem with are numbers 6 and 7.
In response to #6,
If I want to "Keep my (ethnic and/or cultural) identity strong" by flying the American Flag, there should not be a problem with that as long as I fly a same-size or larger Mexican Flag above my own (uh... That's after I am in Mexico, not here in the US, based on the email.)
The flag of the nation in which you are living, working, breathing, and to whom you supposedly owe some type of allegiance (for NOT overly harassing you because you are there illegally, for education, for medical care, for work/pay, for life... whatever) should be flown ABOVE above ANY other, showing that it (now) comes FIRST with you.
In other words ... I am proud of my own country -- That is my heritage -- and I wish to show it by flying it's flag. If I wish to show it, I should NOT supersede my new country's symbols with my own.
The point being made in the email is that the Mexican Flag is being flown INSTEAD OF or OVER the American Flag, here in the US, and that is wrong. THAT I DO agree with.
In response to #7,
What I do in my own home is my own business (well... In America this is the case... In Mexico, to be honest, I don't know).
If I wish to speak English there, that's what will happen. AND, if I wish my children to know the language of my original country, one of the better ways for this to occur is for them to ONLY speak it at home. (If we don't have "local" neighbors visiting who don't speak it.)
HOWEVER, in public and elsewhere, I should "speak the language" of the area.
Being bi- or multi-lingual isn't a bad thing. In fact, in a growing number of cases, it will help you find better jobs. But in all places there is and should be a "base" language. In Mexico, it's a variation of Spanish. In America, is English.
"When in Rome..."
It should be noted that America is one of the few countries in the world that will even ALLOW numbers 6 & 7 (my versions).
