Items on this page were researched by Bill Sanders (aka LYAO Editor or "-LE")

Each item in question is in a white box and listed first, followed by it's status, links to my sources (where I determined the fact was right, wrong, etc.), and any comments I might have on the subject in a light yellow box. ;-)

Any short notes written by me on quoted material are in square brackets ("[" and "]"]

This is the second time I've seen a version of this email, recently. Since I can't find another email in my archives about it, the first was probably from reading the Snopes article on it, linked from their newsletter. See my Comments (below) for more.

American Flag v Mexican Flag

AKA: THE AMERICAN FLAG COMES SECOND

Subject: American flag v. Mexican flag at CA. high school--disgusting public acts

THE AMERICAN FLAG COMES SECOND

You will not see this heart-stopping photo on the front page of the NY Times or on the lead story of the major news networks.

You should.

Mexican Flag over the Upside-Down American Flag

03/28: Student protest in Whittier area students from Pioneer, California and Whittier high schools walked out of classes to protest the proposed federal immigration bill March 27, 2006. The protestors put up the Mexican flag over the American flag flying upside down at Montebello High.

Like I said: Welcome to reconquista [also from Michelle Malkin].

[The above two items are LINKS on the original site to other articles. In the email, all that was shown is the unhighlighted text shown above. I have restored the linkages, here. -LE]

I predict this stunt will be the nail in the coffin of any guest-worker/amnesty plan on the table in Washington. The image of the American flag subsumed to another and turned upside down on American soil is already spreading on Internet forums and via e-mail.

[NOTE: This complete article, including the pictures, is from the website of journalist Michelle Malkin, posted March 29, 2006 at 01:15 AM. There are updates from later on 3/29 and feedback, following the complete article (see sources, below). -LE]

[The following paragraph was inserted into Ms. Malkin's text. -LE]

Pass this along to every American citizen in your address books and to every representative in the state and federal government. If you choose to remain uninvolved do not be amazed when you no longer have a nation to call your own nor anything you have worked for left since it will be "redistributed" to the activists while you are so peacefully staying out of the "fray". Check history, it is full of nations/empires that disappeared when its citizens no longer held their core beliefs and values. One person CAN make a difference. One plus one plus one plus one plus one plus one.........

[THIS (the following) was the original last line of Ms. Malkin's article, before the 03/29 updates and feedback.]

The battle for our secure borders and immigration laws that actually mean something, however, hasn't even begun.

Status: RIGHT, but ...

Comment(s):

Get all the facts before passing this type of thing on... It was one student... Not the crowd and not a member of the school where it happened... That school was locked down! (snopes).

From Ms Malkin's website - Some students DID leave the school where it happened, defying the lock-down. There WAS some violence associated with the event (no... no riot... just a few students out of the thousand or so that were there... and basically rock- and bottle-throwing.)

No matter whether they are legal or illegal immigrants, I can't stand emails (or comments or ...) floating around blaming all for a minority. Please note that arrests were made (a few teens throwing rocks at passing cars), but there were (thankfully) no injuries.

And I repeat... The flag thing was ONE student from one of the other schools. It was NOT a student from Montebello, where it happened.

Be sure to read the follow-ups and feedback on Ms Malkins' site, as well as the Snopes article.

That being said, DO NOT ASSUME that I believe the action should go unpunished.

Snopes notes that there's an addendum to the ORIGINAL (the above is NOT the original) email making the rounds, which explains that numerous people, including the administrators of the schools involved, and even those at the march to which the first mob of students were going were shocked and dismayed by what happened, and that the student had no idea what he was doing. It was also noted that the student responsible for the flag incident was punished "consistent with the California Education Code" and that "the boy is expected to send a letter of apology to Montebello school officials." No names or further details were given because of legal and privacy issues. These addendums appear to be follow-ups by Ms. Malkin.
