Safety Tips for Women
AKA: No known akas
These are important warnings.
We can now add to the list of victims the retired 77 yr. old TCU professor from Ft Worth whose body was found last week in Oklahoma--and the 11 yr. old in Sarasota, FL. Because of these recent abductions in daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation. This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your children, everyone you know.
After reading these 9 crucial tips, forward them to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we! live in.
- Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest
point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!
- Learned this from a tourist guide in New
Orleans. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or
purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you
... chances are that he is more interested in your
wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the
wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
- If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car,
kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out
the hole and start waving like crazy The driver
won't see you, but everybody else will. This has
saved lives
- Women have a tendency to get into their cars
after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit
(doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T
DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and
this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on
the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell
you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR,
LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
- A few notes about getting into your car in a
parking lot, or parking garage:
- Be aware: look around you, look into your
car, at the passenger side floor, and in the
back seat.
- If you are parked next to a big van, enter
your car from the passenger door. Most serial
killers attack their victims by pulling them
into their vans while the women are attempting
to get into their cars.
- Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.
- Be aware: look around you, look into your
car, at the passenger side floor, and in the
back seat.
IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
- ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs.
(Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the
perfect crime spot. This is especially true at
NIGHT!)
- If the predator has a gun and you are not under
his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit
you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then
, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN,
Preferably in a zig-zag pattern!
- As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP. It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
******** Here it is *******
Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door."
The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.
Please pass this on and DO NOT open the door for a crying baby ----This e-mail should probably be taken seriously because the Crying Baby theory was mentioned on America's Most Wanted this past Saturday when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana.
I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know. It may save a life. A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle. I was going to send this to the ladies only, but guys, if you love your mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, etc., you may want to pass it onto them, as well.
Status: WRONG, but...

You can believe the whole list (which would be wrong), or you can read what Snopes has to say on each and every point. Snopes is written by Barbara Mikkelson (a women!) and her husband, so it's not advice from a cop, fireman, security guard or any other authority, but many of the above are more about common sense. See the first source, above for more.
While I have seen authorities on Discovery Channel shows, Oprah and other talk shows discuss some of the above methods, and realize that even Barbara can be wrong at times (ie: I have seen authorities that DO say to run from a gun as in #7), Barbara points out that the statistics listed are not KNOWN to be a fact.
She also lists (and describes/analyzes) four (4) tips to help you AVOID being a victim of random violent crime.
If this is something you worry about, read the Snopes article. Then look elsewhere for other articles on safety and violent crime (what about non-violent crime?) and read them. (I'd list the sections in Barbara's article here as bullet-points, but too many people would only read them. Read what she has to say about each point!)
Don't EVER simply go
by a many-forwarded email
FOR ANYTHING ...
... especially when it comes to your safety, money, your children's' safety, etc.
Use your own common sense. If you don't have any of your own (and many of you who don't KNOW you don't), talk it over with friends and family who DO have it.
If emails like this cause you to worry, use them as a catalyst to do your own research, learn all you can and PLAN for those worrisome situations.
- When I was a factory security guard:
- I felt that I should try to think like a
criminal, to help me spot things that could
lose the company money, like:
- material near an outside door
- "good stuff" in the trash
- running water in the bathrooms (no... not a toilet that had just been flushed, unless it happened on two separate rounds or there was supposed to be no one else IN the factory)
- etc.
- I also felt I had to "dumb down" and
think like the "lowest man man on the totem
pole", and watch for things,
like:
- paper in ashtrays (I put out a few minor fires that way)
- ANY slippery surfaces (workman's comp claims)
- ANY other "trip hazards" (same thing)
- ANYTHING that could cause injury and/or illness (like chemicals near each other)
- I felt that I should try to think like a
criminal, to help me spot things that could
lose the company money, like:
- When I drive, I always try to plan "an out,"
in case something happens in front of me, and I
watch my mirrors and other drivers as if I were
in a boat on the lake having to watch for other
boats, skiers, swimmers, etc.
- That "out" may entail driving into the ditch or field off the side of the road/highway, but the damage (and injuries) should be MUCH less than ramming into a stopped, exploding or burning vehicle at speed, or head-on into a car crossing the median.
It only takes consciously doing something 20-30 times before it becomes a habit. (Some will nit-pick about the number, but it's almost always within this range.)
So, what can you do?
- DON'T BECOME PARANOID to the point that you cannot function. This type of email can justify a reaction like this. If it happens, the "bad guys" have won a victory of sorts, scaring you out of doing things you need to do or that make you happy.
- BE OBSERVANT - Pay attention to everything
that's going on around you. Train yourself
to be able to describe cars, people,
surroundings. As I said, you do it enough
times (for yourself), it becomes a habit.
Then, if something does happen, you can give
the authorities information they may need.
- Keep a pad and pen(cil) in your car. If you see something that doesn't look right, write down license numbers, colors, clothing, makes and models (if you can), etc. We've all seen enough cop shows (real or fiction) we should have a decent idea of what information they will want. The majority of the time, it will mean nothing, but for that ONE time that it DOES...
- Use your cell and call 911 if you see something. I've called the cops on a number of "impaired" drivers, and with one, it turned out he was a wanted drug dealer. You may not ever know what happens to the person, but you do feel a sense of accomplishment.
- Think about scenarios and what you would do
in each. Do this every time you come even close
to a worrisome situation. After a while, it will
become automatic, and when/if the situation
arises, you:
- will KNOW what you will do
- will do it without thinking, since the situation has already been processed so many times in your mind.
- Be willing to modify your chosen "plan of
attack" from #1, as you learn more.
- Recently, they put stressed-wire "dividers" in the medians of the interstate near where I live. Now driving off the road into the median is not really an option when I'm driving. Back to the ditch and fields only!
- If you want, take classes in self-defense and practice with trusted friends or relatives. (Don't do the damage to them that you would do to a REAL attacker - thumbs in the eyes, kick to the balls, etc. - but ...)
And for God's sake, don't believe EVERYTHING you read in an email without checking it out yourself!
Oh ... BTW: #9 was added some time after the first eight (8) came out, and while a safety factor, and you should be able to see and know what you're opening your door for, the story described is false. While it's in the "nine tips" article in the Snopes story above, it also has its own page on Snopes - see the second (2nd) source link.
Note: There are other links in the Snopes stories. Be sure to read them, too.
