Glossary & Definitions

OFPv2 now has the capability to define acronyms, abbreviations, and, sometimes, full terms and phrases, (all are called "term" in this description) which may or may not correspond to actual definitions - Please note that the majority do.

As you should be able to see above and here, OFPv2 is underlined with a dashed line. If you roll your cursor over one of these terms, your cursor will change to a help-cursor (normally with a question-mark ["?"]), and a tool-tip, with an expansion of an acronym or abbreviation, or a short definition of the term will appear.

If you wish to know more about the term, simply click on it, and you will be taken to the glossary page, directly to the definition. Some of these entries will include links to external sites, where even more information can be found on the term. Others may just be the abbreviation/acronym expansion.

NOTE: Sometimes, other formatting will take precedence (such as in headers, etc.), so the dashed underline may not appear correctly. The term may still be defined.

Visited/Unvisited Links

I wanted to point out links that had been visited, but didn't necessarily like the way it appears as "standard" - which is to change the color, and it remains that way as long as it's in your history of visited links. To me, especially in text links, the color change disrupts the flow and aesthetics of the page. To be sure, even the full underline for text links, or the "dashed border" I use for the defined terms (see above) can "disrupt" this flow, but to show people where these are, rather than change the color, I tolerate this concession.

So, to show links that you haven't visited (at all, or after they're cleared from your history), when you roll the cursor over them, the link will appear in yellow with a dark green background. If you have visited the link (and it's still in your history of visited links), when you roll the cursor over it, it will appear in yellow with a more "normal" green background.

These colors also are used when you roll over the "New Window Links", below. Remember, the text link before the buttons and the link ON the buttons are the same, and on the same page, so they should show the background colors when you roll the cursor over them.

NOTE: The sidebar navigation buttons will NOT show whether you've been there before.

New Window Links

Through all my research, I have found that many people do not like when they click a link and it opens a new window without warning them. The plan for OFPv2 was, and is, to define all external and "special" links with a button icon, allowing the text link to open in the current window, and the button to open it in a new window.

After a couple of attempts (see Original Attempts v Final Product, External Links & New Windows), I decided I wanted something to differentiate between the TYPE of links (ie: external/off-site, photo album, off-site definition, etc.), as in my second attempt, but smaller.

I thought about abbreviations and a key, but didn't think it would make sense to novice users. So, I'm color-coding a "New Window" button, and putting the information in the title, so it will will show up when it's rolled over in the "tool-tip".

Remember, the text link will open the link in the current window and the "New Window" button will open in in a ... New Window.

Examples (Null links):

External Link New Window (dark green on light orange)
Photo Album New Window (white on maroon)
External/Off-Site Definition New Window (white on red)
Special Onsite Page New Window (dark green on orange)
Future Use New Window (white on blue)
Future Use New Window (white on dark blue)
Future Use New Window (white on brown)
Answerbag Links New Window (white on AB blue)
AB FAQ Permalinks AB FAQ Permalink (AB Blue on white)

Printing OFP Pages

PLEASE NOTE that OFPv2 pages will NOT print as they appear on the screen (green on light green with navigation link sidebar and bottom of page linkbar). They will appear in black & white (except for the graphics and pictures), centered on a page. (Look at your browser's Print Preview to see what I mean.) The Inline Buttons (see paragraph above) will also not print.

I'm trying to figure out a way to include the links. For now, when you print, if you have the option, print the table of links, too.

At this time, also (10/21/2006), there are still SOME pages that do not print correctly - They will probably only include the first page. Please let me know if you run across one of them, and let me know which ones they are so I can fix them.
