Introduction AB FAQ Permalink

Answerbag has never really had a user-guide, as near as I can tell. The staff posted questions and answers to the "Answerbag" category, but soon more and more questions appeared, and they have gotten pretty much lost in the mix. A user, Kyogre-Stataen, put together the closest thing to it in December, 2007, and while EXCELLENT compared to anything else AB had (a one-stop place for MANY questions about AB), it was created as an answer, could not integrate images, and was somewhat limited in it's description.

Soon after I started on AB in earnest, early in 2008, I began adding relationship links that I used quite often to my AB Profile. As I searched through my prior answers for them, I ran across my answers to AB questions, which I thought should also be placed in one location. (Anyone who has searched their answers for one they've given before, unless they can remember specific keywords and can use Google to do so, has found it can take some time. To save that time, I started putting my (and others' I found) best answers to AB questions in my profile, too. After a time, it became a repository to which I seem to be continually adding links and information.

In May, 2008, I used feedback on a question, to ask about it. In Rich's (AB-Rich) reply to me, he added:

Compliments on a great profile!  Our official site FAQ should be so comprehensive.

On the comment thread of one of my answers I called "Prettifying Your Profile" in MY profile, someone said they didn't understand it. I had tried to explain as best I could, but again, in AB Answer format, it was difficult to do so, so I created a webpage on THIS site, explaining everything step-by-step.

Knowing that at some point I will reach a limit on size in my profile, I also had the thought to create this User-Guide for Answerbag. BUT, because I was and would be dealing with copyrighted material (Answerbag's copyright of it's design, etc., trademarked logo, etc., etc.), I thought I'd better check with Rich to be sure it would be ok. So, I sent him the following email:

Dear Rich (or whomever on the staff reads this),

I have put a page on my website with step-by-step instructions on "Prettifying Your AB Profile". It's at http://www.orangefrogproductions.com/ofp2m_faq_ab_profile.shtml. I want to make sure that this is ok, since it's about AB. Looking through it, I saw a couple of very minor things I missed (I'll fix it soon), but I think this will help others make their profiles more ... Theirs. The pictures in the right places will help, too, which I don't believe you can do in answers. (Haven't tried, yet!) I know that some said this was very complicated, and I thought a fuller (more detailed, and illustrated) explanation than I did at http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/2742021 was in order.

Please let me know if anyone at AB has a problem with this. If so, I will remove it. (I have also linked to it in my profile.)

I'm thinking of putting together a comprehensive user-guide using a lot of the answers I've linked, and some of the commentary I've made in my profile. I'm slowly working on it. If I ever get it done, I'm not sure if it will appear on my site, or in a question with multiple answers, expanding (a LOT) on what Kyogre-Stataen did. Either way, the idea would be that ALL the information would be in ONE place, without a lot of comments and other answers mixing it up, making it hard to find the right info.

Let me know, please. Thanks.

And Rich immediately replied:

Hi Bill,

Both that and the user guide sound great! Keep me posted...

Thanks,
Rich

And so began my work on this group of documents. I have taken my time, since Answerbag has not had a User Guide since it started, except in the form of questions and answers, both from staff and users. I hope you find it useful to you. Hopefully, we will be able to cut down on the number of duplicated Answerbag questions and answers, leaving Answerbag for the more serious educational, and frivolous and fun questions and answers, and have fewer confused newbies (or noobies or however you wish to spell it).

NOTE: Each header is a bookmark to that location on that page, and should be included not only at the top of the individual page, but some may also appear in the Answerbag User-Guide Index, below. Except for the main header on each page, each bookmark should have one of the following buttons beside it: AB FAQ Permalink. (See definition of Permalink for more). If you link  to a specific spot in, or quote a passage from, this guide, please use the Permalink at or above it. Simply right-click on the Permalink, highlight "Copy Shortcut" (IE) or "Copy Link Location" (FF), switch back to the page on which you wish to place it, place the cursor in position, and Paste it (Control-V).

If you find anything in this group of documents that is in error, you know something that is missing, or you have a question about AB not covered here, please be sure to let me know. Using the Contact button in the left sidebar, or the comments/questions link at the bottom of the page, will let me know the question is about AB. Please be sure to include your AB profile name, and any page(s) on AB to which you are referring in the email. Thank you.

PLEASE NOTE: This User-Guide is currently (October 27, 2008) incomplete. I have had numerous things get in the way, since Rich said "Go for it", and as many others are, I'm addicted to Answerbag.

I am working on new pages as you read this. When done, it will still be a work-in-progress, as members point out errors, make suggestions, and Answerbag, itself, continues to grow.

If you find something missing here, let me know. (Click Contact Me, or my email at the bottom of every page. The page-name will automatically be loaded.

And, maybe we can get them to create an "Answerbag User-Guide" category for questions and suggestions. Smiley - Winky

Please note: I am one person. Pages on this site are static, meaning I create them from scratch, and do not use internet programming to make things work. In this case, though, there are so many integrated pieces throughout that I don't know how well programming would work. It seems to take 2-3 days for each page, depending on detail, and including new glossary terms and links; new links, both to this site, to Answerbag, and to other pages; including questions and answers from Answerbag; figuring out which images to use where, so I have the visual in the right places - not available in Answerbag answers; and making sure everything works. I admit I may have missed a few links or terms that should be defined, etc. And, I'm sure there will be many more pages added while and after I get this part done. Please be patient. I will get it done. I just can't guarantee when! -wds
