- AncestorHunt - "Free genealogy search engines including Mormon Church Records, Ellis Island ship passengers, Census records, United Kingdom Records, CensusDiggins, Genealogy.com and more."
- AccessGenealogy
- "... one of the few genealogy sites where free really means
"free." Each week we put up many databases and genealogy
books on our site which cost you nothing to search, access, read,
and use in your personal genealogy search. This is our data,
on our site. Not just links to someplace else. Yet we also go
further... Our genealogy directory includes even more free genealogy
resources that can be found across the web on a variety of subjects
and locations."
- Free Census Indexes - Scroll down and click the state for which you need the census. Sorry. I only listed direct links below to the states in which I'm currently working. If my ancestors show up in more states, I will include their links, too. Meanwhile, just go to the Free Census link, find the state you need, and click on it. This site also contains links to Ancestry's Census Images Index, for which you will need a subscription to view the images.
- FamilySearch - "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been gathering genealogical records across the world for more than a century to help its members and others in family history research. Today, the Church is the world leader in family history, operating more than 3,400 Family History Centers worldwide in addition to the huge collection of records at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City." The information available on this site is free. The 1880 Census is indexed, and there are other databases available. Your search can be with Exact Spelling turned on or off, which makes it easier to find those misspelled or phonetically written records. It appears that an agreement has been reached with Ancestry.com, and they now use the FamilySearch 1880 Census Index, linked to Ancestry's images. Even so, this is a good source for secondary sources.
- GenCircles - Family sheet information uploaded by users - Includes "SmartMatching" ($$), which ties the individual name to other possible connections, some of which may have more information.
- Genealogy Sleuth - Search for your Ancestors on the Internet - Lotsa links to search sites, some for software, some for subscription/pay services and many for free.
- Genealogy Freebies - Free Genealogy Resources - More links to free stuff.
- Genealogy Inc
- "... dedicated to making some simple tools and basic information
available to the home genealogist to help make their research
easier." Provides links to various "my..." genealogical sites, which
in turn provide links to more localized data. Many of these links
are to Ancestry.com Databases, but many are not. Worth exploring.
One of the more handy items is the County Formation Maps, showing
how each state's county boundaries changed over the years. Not all
states are represented, but the majority are.
- Northeastern Genealogy Online - This one uses a map approach, making it very easy to use.
- Southeastern Genealogy Online - This one uses a map approach, making it very easy to use.
- County Maps
- Census Maps
- WebRoots.org - Nonprofit Library for Genealogy & History-Related Research - A Free Resource Covering the United States and Some International Areas - "... diaries, journals, letters, manuscripts, memoirs, etc. ... from many different sources and contributors, and many different scanners and OCR software ... most all ... are presented in plain text."
