This page contains links to genealogical guides, sites where you can find information and supplies (many free) such as various forms (e.g. census extraction forms, family charts, etc.), etc. Please note that many of the other categories contain sites with guides, information, and forms, too.
Start at the very beginning
- How To Begin - Genealogy
- HGS Family History and the Internet - An article about using the internet to find your family history on the internet. Contains a lot of links to sites where records and information can be found. But, the real interest, here, is in how to use the internet in your search.
- BRAT Genealogy - Lots of information and links, including a tutorial.
- How to Read a 200-Year Old Document and Other FAQs
- Census Information - Slightly dated, but has information about What it is, What's in it, Indexing information, etc.
General Information
-
FamilySearch.org - Research Guidance
- Name Variations in United States Indexes and Records - information about different ways your ancestors name could have been spelled.
- RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees No. 8 - "Why U Can't Find Your Ancestors - Misspeld Knames — A Commun Probblem for Reserchors" - This page discusses various reasons your ancestor's names may be misspelled in various places.
- Helpful Information - contains abbreviations used in genealogy/genealogic programs, a table of "Epidemics through Time", and possible naming patterns for children.
Handwriting Analysis
- Deciphering Old Handwriting - Handwriting is one of the biggest "bug-a-boos" when attempting to read old-time (pre-computer!) records, especially census records. Sometimes, it seems the enumerator was attempting to write as fancily as he could, and other times, it seems like all they wanted to do was get it done and over with. Use this site to better understand it all.
- US Census Records - Handwriting - Before you start looking at handwritten images, it might be a good idea (even if you CAN read bad and fancy "cursive" handwriting) to check this site out. It has quite a number of examples of handwriting and abbreviations used in handwritten records.
Source and Citation Information
- A Brief Citation Guide for Internet Sources in History and the Humanities - suggestions detailing methods for citing your internet sources.
- Library & Information Science Citation Guides for Electronic Documents - suggestions detailing methods for citing your internet sources from various organizations.
- RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees No. 12 - Article on Evidence-gathering and citing your sources

- How to Cite Sources - from Genealogy.com
- Common Internet & Electronic Citations - from ProGenealogists.com
- Citing Sources - List of links from Cyndi's List
- ONLINE! - A reference guide for using internet sources - While not all the links are Genealogical in nature, it does show how to cite sources and has TONS of links
Tools
- Forms and Charts - from ABCGenealogy.com
- Census Tools Electronic Spreadsheets - Written using Microsoft Excel 97, these spreadsheets are "... formatted to faithfully match the actual census for each year." The designer allows download for free (name and email address equested) and, "If you receive it from me directly, from a friend, or via this download page and find it a useful tool, I ask that you consider making a small donation of $10 to my address or online." I think that you WILL find them useful.
Other Info/Stuff
- Fun Stuff for Genealogists, Inc. - An online store with bunches of genealogical "stuff", including key rings, clip art, historic maps, mugs, clothing, etc. Check it out. The LINKS page contains many genealogical links.
- PetuniaPress - "Home of MISSING LINKS: A Magazine for Genealogists and SOMEBODY'S LINKS: Genealogical Treasures Found" - Have you "rescued" old bibles, records, yearbooks, jewelry, etc. from flea markets?... Secondhand stores?... Pawn shops?... Garage sales?... Your own attic/basement? ... and want to get them to the descendants of the original owner? It is possible that YOUR ancestor's books, bibles, records, etc. are out there in some some flea market, secondhand store, etc. (You get the idea, and MIGHT be surprised!) This site and its associated newsletters are dedicated to helping those old objects and records find their families. The stories of how some of these records are found are interesting, too.
