Libraries

  • Library of Congress - "... the nation's oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with more than 130 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves. The collections include more than 29 million books and other printed materials, 2.7 million recordings, 12 million photographs, 4.8 million maps, and 58 million manuscripts."
  • Internet Public Library - "... a public service organization and a learning/teaching environment at the University of Michigan School of Information." Look at this site as a "library" containing links to educational, historical, social, and economical information, many in digital image and e-book form. (Links to links upon links upon...)
  • Questia - "... the first online library that provides 24/7 access to the world's largest online collection of books and journal articles in the humanities and social sciences, plus magazine and newspaper articles. You can search each and every word of all of the books and journal articles in the collection. You can read every title cover to cover. This rich, scholarly content -- selected by professional collection development librarians -- is not available elsewhere on the Internet." ($$) NOTE: You can subscribe by month, quarter or year. Before you do, you can perform searches for specific information (be sure to start your search with the widest search term, then narrow it down little-by-little by searching within those results, or use the Advanced Search.) BE WARNED: The searches post the criteria going forward, and you CANNOT back out - the page expires. You are allowed to view 2-3 pages of any book in the library without subscribing.
  • Public Libraries - "Our mission is to serve people with an easy access to the use of public libraries and promote reading." - Links to most, if not all, of the libraries (public, state, university/college, presidential, national and many others) worldwide.

Our libraries are using digital technology to preserve these valuable resources and provide Hoosiers with access via the Internet to the historical and cultural heritage of Indiana." Contains links to a number of Indiana Library online databases, including obituaries, pictures, etc.
  • Indiana Archival and Historical Repositories - from The Society of Indiana Archivists, this site is a "... directory of archival repositories and historical collections in Indiana ..." - Names, addresses, times and phone numbers.
  • Open-Access Text Archive - "This collection is free and open for everyone to use." ... "The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an ‘Internet library,’ with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format." - This archive also has movies, audio, software, and other items, "preserve society’s cultural artifacts and to provide access to them."
