Unless otherwise marked ("$$"), the following provide both free and purchase versions of the programs. Some will also require a subscription to updated definitions. Free scanners may require download of small programs and maybe utilities (ie: Java, etc.) And even those that cost money will sometimes offer a free trial period.

Please note that many of the following will also deal with the other type of malware. Be aware that you SHOULD run all types, because although they try to cover everything, they look at things differently, so one may find things others have missed.

Also note that some of the free scanners do not include removal tools. Do your own research and pick the software that's best for you.

To fully protect your computer, run your virus scanner at least once-a-week, and more, if you download things regularly. Run your other scanners regularly (at least once-a-week), too. Make sure on each run, you've got the most recent list of definitions. The good ones will either automatically download definitions before running, or will tell you your definitions are out-of-date (they have new ones).

NOTE: Many of the above also purport to scan other malware. Some, of course, do better jobs than others. It may also be worth your security to check out, download and run some of the following.
