Page Title:

I cannot guarantee that I will mark or remove everything I plan to do to OFP for Version 2, but I will try.

As of 09/29/2006, all OFPv2 pages that could validated to HTML 4.01 Transitional standards. At some point I may try "Strict" on a few pages, but currently am leery of doing more than that. We'll see. The Screen and Print CSSs validated, too, except for Inline Button styles (they include hacks) and warnings for not defining a background color when I defined a foreground color. (Transparent isn't a color, apparently!)

Still to come, as of September 29, 2006:

Finish Installing

  • Test using a PHP in the HTML of existing pages.
    • Create a page on OFP2, then another on OFP1, and set OFP1 to "permanently forward" to OFP2.
    • When sure about that,:
      1. Set all the pages in OFP1 to point to the associated OFP2 pages
      2. Clear the old folders (images, javascript, etc.)
      3. Move everything from OFP2 to OFP domain on MY computer
      4. Republish
      5. Remove /OFP2 directories, though by then, I may have to set IT up to forward to OFP simple.
    • Update the Google Sitemap with all of the new stuff. Since PAGE names are different, all the old pages can stay for now.
    • When I'm sure relatively few are left in the search engines, I will delete them. (My new 404 page contains a link to the old sitemap, linked to the new pages, and the brand-spankin'-new sitemap.)
  • At that point, all pages on the site should begin with OFP2_???. and all but a very few should use the SSIs. (The SSIs have been hard-coded into those pages.)

While I'm waiting for OFP1 to stop being used, I will begin updating all the pages I only partially converted to OFP2 standards:

  • Add Glossary links and entries as needed.
  • Change all text links to use the current window and add the Off-Site/New Window button for each.
    • This entails adding titles to each link, removing target="_blank" from the text link, putting the buttons on each. HOWEVER, there are times it feels the buttons kinda crowd the page, especially where these links are in paragraph form.

Plans for New Window Buttons

Thinking out loud, here... I want to make the button much smaller.

FIRST, though, . I have to figure out why some don't display the correct colors in the "New Window" half. Then again, if I work out something I smaller that I like better...

Remember (for others... I WILL remember it! :-p )

  • They have be "intuitive" about what they are.
  • I'd like them to be larger than a smiley, but smaller than 15-25 characters. Remember, it can get crowded when links are in paragraphs.
  • The Title attribute for them can be something like "Click to open preceding link in New Window - xxx" where "xxx" is the same title used for the text link.
  • Each type is "color coded"
    • The blank space between the top and bottom of the sidebar can be used for a "legend" (I can mass-sub the single paragraph line used in the HTML pages for another SSI for this...) - For others: I need to make site-wide changes like this as simply as possible, since there are over 150 pages - and growing - here.)

Things to try...

  • Abbreviate the text on them. Would the "legend" idea work and would the abbreviated explanations be enough?
  • Current "New Window Buttons":
    • "Off-Site | New Window" = "OS | NW" (External Link)
    • "Photo Album | New Window" = "PA | NW" (Only one, right now)
    • "Off-Site Definition | New Window" = "OSD | NW" (for other-than-dictionary definitions, which I can bring into my Glossary. ie: copyrighted, full-page, etc.)
  • Maybe I just need the "NW" part using different colors for each type ... ? Actually, that might be a better idea... Hmmm...

I will probably find I need others as I go along.

Anyone out there who happen to be reading this have any ideas? Send me an email!

Other Stuff and On-Going

  • Finish the research on Infomercials I only have moved the OFP1 stuff to.
  • Add all the examples of the different types of Scams I have obtained and archived.
  • Add new pages as I research new Scams, Shams (Infomercials), Flim-Flams (Rumors/Virus Hoaxes)
  • Add other "Graphics Design" stuff, showing capabilities.
  • Don't forget the "How Did I..." FAQ about how things were done, here. (This one might continue to grow for a while...)
