Things I Did, Below

I, personally, receive email in HTML format. The following was received (and looked) like I received it. At the time, I was more interested in the message than the headers and do not have the original. This is a copy I forwarded to myself as I sent it to my father.

  • I removed my email addresses. These came to various accounts and some no longer exist. There are places on this site you can get hold of me if you wish or need to. They are protected from spambots using JavaScript, but all you have to do is click on them.
  • All scammer and related email addresses, and any actual website links have been changed, at least putting spaces into them. They appear as underlined blue links, though they aren't.
  • Any notes I added in the actual letter are in square brackets ("[" "]"), are bold, red in color, and highlighted. If what I found "behind the links" (email or website) are different than what was displayed, I will include them in this type of note.
  • All spelling, spacing, line-wrapping, and punctuation errors are the ones that appeared in the original received email. (I may or may not analyze some or all of these.)

Scam Example
Received 02/15/2007 [I actually received two copies to the same address about 5 minutes apart]

Greetings!

My Name is Derek Alexandra, the Regional Manager of UBS Investment Bank in London and would like to strike a business deal with you prior to your approval and consideration. There was a Non Resident Account opened in my Branch and for the past 6 years this account was dormant without operation and at the same time nobody has come to claim the account with its closing balance of 35.7million.This has made me to trace the source and origin of the funds and the beneficiary starting since the year 2005 and today I have gathered every report confirming that the Beneficiary was a Top Government Official in his country and now have passed away six years ago leaving no legal inheritance instructions on the account. The families have no idea that such funds exist because the account was opened with a different name in order to maintain the privacy of the account in question.

On this note, this account will be converted into the bank treasury by the end of first quarter of the year if no one has come for the claiming of the funds. Therefore,I come to you to know if you will endorse this offer so that I will present you as the Next of Kin to claim the funds while official documents will be prepared to support our claims. This is a straight forward deal without any risk attached. Our sharing ratio will be 50:50 should incase if you are interested. Please forward me your direct telephone numbers for discussion of this offer in further details  or call me on +44 702 4013 255. [DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER (see below)]

Yours Sincerely,
Derek Alexandra.

[NOTE: I left names, email addresses, and phone numbers in here for the search engines to find. DO NOT TRY TO CONTACT THEM! I'm SURE you will be ripped off! -LE]

Notes

Problems I see:

  • Obvious (to me, anyway) errors:
    • from the email, itself:
      • The typical grammar, punctuation and spelling errors that a professional (bank manager in London) would most likely never make.
    • from the Email Headers:
      • The IP Address "8.3.8.106" could not be located through GeoBytes.com - IP Address Locator, leading me to believe it is "spoofed" (faked).
      • UN-typically, the free email address (yahoo.co.uk) is actually from the same country as the message appears to be. HOWEVER, due to the fact that anyone from anywhere can create an email address from any country, this means nothing.
      • For either of those email addresses used, be aware that Yahoo is a free email service all over the world, therefore making it very easy to set up email addresses. (From my point of view, "alexdarek2000", sounds like an email address set up in 2000.)
