Dear Mr. Sanders,
My name is Katherine <surname removed> from Pleasanton, CA. I recently found out that my name and home address appears in one example on your website regarding work at home scams.
<link to OFP's Work-at-Home Scam - 09/25/2007 Example (Advantage Global LLC) Page>
My name is evidently associated with Pasadena Recruitment, which is listed as a registrant name and administrative organization under Marietta Services.org.
Please be advised I have no affiliation, connection or knowledge of Pasadena Recruitment, Marietta Services or Advantage Global LLC. I do not know how an individual or organization linked my specific name and address to what appears to be an illegitimate operation.
This is mis-representation. I have contacted an attorney and am currently in the process of performing research into the matter. We intend to initially identify the owner(s) of the domain names and pursue any legal remedies available in order to resolve the situation.
Your website appears to expose scams through education to the public, examples and helpful links. You have divulged some of the searches and names you found in your research, and I am interested in any additional information you may have to share regarding Pasadena Recruitment. If you would please contact me at <email address removed> I would be very interested in your feedback.
Considering the information pertaining to my association with Pasadena Recruitment is patently false, I am requesting that you please remove my name and address from the example on your website. You are a Good Samaritan to publish this data to help others; however, in the attempt to aid others it’s not helpful to me that my name and address appear on the internet associated with a scam. Thank you for your assistance and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
<Signature removed>

Now, Katherine seemed sincere to me. The threat of the attorney being involved, while a little bothersome, didn't mean anything, as I retrieved my information from online sources, and simply reported what they had included - therefore, I felt I was safe from lawsuit. However, because a probable innocent party was involved, this was the first request of this type I have received, and their name and address were included on my site, I decided I'd update my page, removing her identifying information.
Besides, as I was thinking, it is extremely possible that the scammers had pulled her name and contact info "out of a hat", so to speak - from a spam mailing address list; from a legitimate mailing address from a site to which she'd signed up, that had been sold to someone associated with them; or maybe they just pulled her name and contact info from the phone book.
So, I replied to her, and updated the page.

Dear Ms. <surname removed>,
If you truly were not involved in the business, then I'm sorry you got caught up in it. My guess is that if that's the case, they just picked a random name from the phone book, or some site on the web. I will assume, as you stated, that this is the case, and remove references to your surname and street address from my website, shortly. (I will leave the "Katherine", and put "<surname (and street address) removed by request of innocent party>", and explain that the person listed contacted me, and had no knowledge of her name being used, nor of the website listed. - I hope that will be sufficient?)
Please know that I just copy-and-pasted the WHOIS from GoDaddy.com for MariettaServices.org, which appears to be no longer available (the site OR the whois... In fact, MariettaServices.org is available for purchase, at this time).
This is, as I understand it, the way scammers like this work. They will take a temporary website, open it just long enough to either put a website on it and send a batch of emails out (the website makes it look VERY real), and hope that someone bites. If you go to my other scam pages, related to this at <link to OFPv2 - Scams - Work-at-Home Scams, Example Links section>, I've found a number (and have a lot more in the works). And, since they disappear so quickly, I've made some into PDF files, so you can see how real they CAN look. (Here's one - <link to OFPv2 - Scams - PR Inc Example PDF>.)
I put all the information I found on the page. I hope that's sufficient for your investigators. I don't have anything else, at this time. I'm sorry for that.
I apologize for any inconvenience having your name on my site, in association with a scam like this, has caused you.
Bill Sanders
Orange Frog Productions
(PS: May I copy your letter to me, removing any identifying information, of course, as a response to this page? I think it would help bolster the "Your name may be associated with a scam website and you don't even know it" type comment I would like to make. Again, NO identifying information will be copied.)
I found I had misspelled her last name when I typed up the above and sent it, so I sent the following later that day:

Dear Ms. <surname removed>,
I'm sorry... I had the right page, and have it as "<surname removed>", but when I typed your salutation, last night, I misspedlled your name. Note the time... It was very early in the morning, and I misread it from the normal 5' away from the screen that I sit. I hope you forgive me.
Bill Sanders
Ok... Ok... I'm not infallible. Who is? LOL
And, as further proof, as I put the second email to her, above, I found that I had misspelled "misspelled" (double "e"). Ah, well...
And, Katherine sent me another email:

Hi Bill,
Thanks so much for responding and understanding my predicament. I truly appreciate your cooperation. I'm sorry for not writing back sooner, the work week gets busy and I don't always make time to check personal email (weekends are key for catch up.)
Yes, I'm more than happy to have you keep some form of an example on your website as long as it removes the personal information e.g. last name, residence address and I could see your redacted version before you post it.
You can also use my letter as an example to show that I contacted you out of the blue for your assistance provided we delete the personal information, yours and mine. I have it in Word and can revise it and resend it to you. Do you want it in Word or Adobe to post to to your site?
Thanks for the link information too, all information is helpful. I have looked at several pages on your site to gain some knowledge about the various types of scams out there, it's very thorough. I'm not sure how much success we'll have in trying to resolve it with those who are responsible, hopefully we'll make some progress. I have been wondering how this could have ever started in the first place. For example, in the past 4 years I've been contacted twice by my employer's health insurance company (my health insurance) that personal laptops or servers containing information were stolen; this would have involved hundreds, if not thousands of people. They handled it through legal means at the time given their liability to those of us who were affected, but I don't know if these situations would have provided any connection to what has happened. Like you said, my name could have been picked random too; you never know. It's awful, and what's worse is there seems to be little control in stopping it.
At any rate, I'll keep you posted with what happens, particularly if we're successful in resolving the problem.
Let me know the format you want the letter and I'll take
care of it for you this weekend.
Thanks again!
Katherine

Dear Katherine,
I have replaced your information on that page as I stated in my prior email. See the new version at - <link to OFP's Work-at-Home Scam - 09/25/2007 Example (Advantage Global LLC) Page> (There are a couple of new paragraphs, too.) Please do check it over to make sure I didn't miss anything that identifies you too closely.
I should be able to do the same to even the PDF (copying and pasting the text), if that's ok... I will put it as a quoted box on a new page tied with the above. (I will also include mine to you, and your letter, below - Again, all identifying info removed, unless I hear otherwise.) I will also make sure you get a direct link to THAT page, to verify it's "cleaned up" enough to your satisfaction when I've published it. If there's still/then a problem, I will make other changes, or remove that new page, if necessary. I will try to do this tomorrow, so as not to cause concern through the week until you can check it out. ;-)
I agree... Scammers are nasty people, and care little about whom they hurt, as long as they get what they want. I hope this is ALL of your identity that's been stolen/used.
Again, I'm sorry for the inconvenience having your name on my page may have caused.

End Notes
Again, these are unsolicited emails I received, as I received them. I only changed formatting slightly (to allow word-wrapping) and removed the authors' names/identifying info, if requested. The claims and comments are the email authors'.
As you can see, if Katherine is telling the truth, and I have no doubt that she is, scammers can cause problems in your life, even if you are NOT the one being scammed. They are a scourge on our - the worldwide - society. I mean, THINK about it. Nigeria has problems, sure, as do many Third World Nations, but they have a SCAM NAMED for them, because of the numbers of people who have lost money, or received the scam mail/email. If whole nations can be bedeviled by scammers to that point, what's a single individual going to do?
Please note: These experiences may POSSIBLY be extraordinary. As they say in health and business infomercials, "Your results (and experiences) may vary." Just be sure to do research on more than MY pages.
