Can I ask you what do you think about ITV independent business opportunities please advise if you think its a sham....or have any feedback ...Thank you.....
of ITV, ITV Direct,
and ITV Ventures™
Now, I had not seen that infomercial on TV. However, since it was tied to ITV and ITV Direct, both run by Donald Barrett, who produces a number of natural product and book infomercials, I thought I'd better check it out. I found a couple of half-hour long videos online, and since I responded to this person with my research (minus the actual viewing of them), I've seen them both.
Donald calls it "Direct Response Network Marketing."
The first one I saw, was a pre-launch video for ITV Ventures, with Donald Barrett speaking directly to the camera, explaining what ITV/V is all about.
Apparently, this was from a DVD that sponsors give to potential downlines, to explain the costs and the business.
presenter from
The Jewelry
Channel
from
ITV Ventures™
Infomercial
The host is Chloe Marshall, a pretty lady with a fairly strong, but relatively easy-to-understand British accent.
Apparently, she's been on television in Britain a lot, and is considered by some a "British Television Personality". She was a reader in "Newshound" on Friendly TV (apparently they simply pretty much read newspaper stories); a presenter on The Jewelry Channel; various other shop-at-home channels and shows; and now, apparently is a sometime ITV host (though I've not seen her in my area, yet).
(Careful, if you search for her online, guys. There are a
number of other Chloe Marshalls, some British, some older
and some younger! And, no. I did not find any nekkid (naked)
pictures of her, though I wasn't really looking... that
hard, anyway.
)
The Pre-Launch Video
May be found at ITV Info Line (left video)
Donald stands in a set resembling a living room, at a whiteboard with a music stand (holding his script, probably) behind him, and describes the business directly to the camera, illustrating points on the whiteboard. He is, obviously, passionate about his business, and it shows. However, what he was describing and illustrating sounded like a typical MLM off- and on-line business opportunity (a la Amway, Shaklee, Herbalife, and various others).
In fact, as he was speaking, and drawing on a white board, the first thing I thought was that I'd seen the presentation before (I used to sell Amway, and sat in on a Quixtar introductory meeting). However, he's changed it up somewhat. Part of this was because of adding in the infomercial as advertisement. Most other MLMs start you out by having you sell the business to your family and friends. Donald says that while you can, you get leads from the infomercials. He also talked about them adding the capability to shunt phone calls in to ITV directly to your home phone, from people calling in to ITV for information and to purchase products, potentially making them YOUR customers - and, apparently, they're your customers for LIFE, meaning if you can get their information into your database, whether they call or buy from you, or call the main office, you are supposed to get the credit.
Another reason this reminded me of Amway (which I realize is one of the first major MLMs), is that this is the way we were taught to explain the business to our recruits. The number has changed, and there are other differences, but as I said, it's probably pretty typical for MLMs. But then again, most of them do not generate leads for you, meaning you must do the selling for yourself, both of the product, and the business.
He explains that the process is "patent pending", meaning no one else is supposed to be able to use it ... It's an ITV invention and theirs to license and distribute as they see fit. While they currently only have about 20 health-related (most natural) products, and Kevin Trudeau's books on natural remedies, they are expecting to have well over 200 products soon.
The Infomercial
May be found at
ITV Info Line
(right video)
The infomercial for ITV Ventures™ was produced at ITV Studios, where Donald normally interviews doctors, people selling natural products, and book authors, except that he sat in the hot-seat, this time, and Chloe interviewed him.
As with most ITV shows, there are usually no cuts to testimonials from those who have used the product. (Typically, there are a couple of "phone calls in" as a testimonial, and maybe a couple of questions.) However, Donald pointed out that the business is just starting out, and NEXT year, he will have testimonials!
The infomercial pretty much says the same thing the pre-launch video does, but without the whiteboard, no graphics, and in an interview format. In fact, there were a couple of places where Donald said almost EXACTLY the same things. (While they look very unscripted, the ITV Infomercials are VERY scripted.)
The Product
So what's the business?
As stated, it appears to be an MLM tied to the infomercials produced by ITV. ITV Ventures™ is relatively new, so it's hard to find anything but people and sites promoting them. This does not mean they are good, bad, will make you a bunch of money, or are a scam. You will have to judge that for yourself, and decide whether you can afford to join.
To me, this DOES sound a lot like Amway/Quixstar, Herbalife, and other MLMs. You sell the product and make a profit, and you sponsor new people into the business, and get income from their initial fees, their sales, and people THEY sponsor. And they sponsor people who sponsor people who... Pyramidic in nature, there are apparently limits. You are only allowed four (4) people as your immediate downline. The assumption is that two or three of those will do well, and get four people under them, and each of them will get four, etc.; And one or two will be talked out of it by family or friends at the beginning. Well, if YOU got a fifth (5th) person, they would go into one of the slots under the downline not doing as well. Not only do YOU make money on their product and downline, but the one(s) not doing as well, do too. They see they're making money just from joining, and realize they can make more if they got more into it, and it motivates them.
There is REQUIRED monthly training, where you will be educated.
Something to remember, though - For each agent, not only will it cost $165 (basic papers) or $499 ("Briefcase in a Box" with samples) startup, but it will cost $129 per month, and this is REQUIRED. It breaks down as follows: You are REQUIRED to sell or buy $100 of product per month. Of course, this means that each member of your downline do, too, which means you get some profit from them. The other $29 required per month is for the training. At this point, I'm not sure what that entails, but I would be willing to bet there are CDs/DVDs, conference calls, newsletters, etc.
And, of course, there will be seminars. Don't count on these being free. They usually aren't. That doesn't mean that it will cost the thousands that individual seminars sometimes do, but it will probably cost up to about $100 each to attend. (And if you don't, some will probably question your commitment.)
Something to think about, though: Because a major part of the business is in promoting the business, and Donald and his crew are changing the way it works, there's always the possibility that they may get in trouble with the government for THIS, too. (ITV and Barrett have already been in trouble for some of the claims made on the products infomercials (not ITV Ventures, that I know of), and some products and claimants have been pulled.) By the same token, Amway and the others weathered MANY government inquiries.
Something ELSE to think about: When you sign someone up at $499 (under you), you get $150 from the PRODUCTS being sold. There's about $600 RETAIL (Around $300 wholesale) products in the package. This means that on the wholesales products, you are making 1/2 in these packages. Since the company still must make a profit, the products cost THEM less than $150 per package. Which means obviously, that SOMEONE is making out BIG TIME with these products. I would venture to say that the cost to make them is pennies.
- The makers are making money (they HAVE to... Why would they make the product in the first place, otherwise. In a Utopian world, it would be for the "good of mankind", but this is NOT a Utopian world. People do things to make money.)
- ITV is making money (for producing the infomercials, for marketing the product, and for the sale, itself, not to mention the monthly $129 it costs each and every person to KEEP making money in ITV Ventures).
- YOU are making money (50% of the WHOLESALE price of the product).
- Your DOWNLINE is making money (100% profit).
And it doesn't appear that ANYONE is making "pennies". Doesn't that mean that the actual CUSTOMERS of the products are being MAJORLY RIPPED OFF?
BTW: Here's a page with terms and conditions to join ITV Ventures as of 10/01/2007. Basically, it's a contract, including most of the costs required to join and stay with ITV Ventures as an IBO. (This page was in a small scrolling box, in fairly small print, like software terms and conditions, which few people read completely. I suggestion you do so, here, so you understand all and for WHAT you are paying.)
Be sure to check out all of the links below, and find more.
DO NOT take my word for anything.
Remember, there are thousands of sites on the internet with free articles and information to help you start a business. There are MANY MLM-specific sites out there. See my Shams/Infomercial Info Links and other links on that page for some of these sites.
And, as always, remember that this is just information I would give to family and friends.
Product Websites
Enter "ITV Ventures™" in a search engine (especially Google) and you will find hundreds or thousands of pages touting the business. Many are or "home-agent" owners' sites. Most will go to a corporate site (meaning many of them look exactly the same). They simple track the homepage that linked to them, and know the owner, whose name they include in the information. The home-agent is supposed to get credit for anyone who goes through their site. (This is the way many MLMs work.)
I have done my best to to "weed out" owner sites, so no one gets credit for my sending potential customers to ITV Ventures™ sites. However, there are so many, and many seem to be named "itv"-something or other ... .
If, after reading this page and it's links, you decide that this opportunity is for you, you will need to find a "sponsor", so use the search I described above, unless you actually know someone. With the internet the way it is, they don't have to be family, friends, or neighbors, nor do they even have to be in your town, state, or country. (I believe the business is only available in the US and maybe Canada, right now.) Be sure they are good - That they actually provide training and other support. They should be easy-to-contact, and well-versed in the business. I suggest you check ALL of the links on this page, prepare a list of questions to ask each potential sponsor you contact, and, if they have problems answering, find someone else.
However, Donald Barrett, himself, has said what many of us believe:
I mean you see things on television like buying real estate with no money down, or the stocks ge... you know... "get in the stock business," or buying and selling notes. All these guys that are selling these money-making vehicles on television? Chloe, they're all making making money in the television infomercial business.
Donald Barrett from his infomercial for ITV Ventures™. Hear it here: Donald Barrett quote. (280KB WMA File)
... And this is true of Donald, himself. He makes no bones about it. By the same token, he was in the business of MAKING infomercials for others, and selling their products. That is until ITV Ventures™.

- Examples of ITV Websites (What YOURS would/could look like)
NOTE: If I found similar pages, I listed two of them that I found through Google, where the main differences are the page "owners" and contact information. Basically, the way they could/would do this is:- The company creates a site.
- The owner (IBO) will purchase a domain name, and set it up to "alias" or forward to the company page.
As the forwarding occurs, the company program will read who's page it is, and place their info on the page.
This way, the company controls what's on the site, protecting themselves from lawsuit.
Apparently, though, if an affiliate wants to do more with their site, as long as it's approved by ITV Legal, they can (see second solid bullet on). Otherwise, they will be asked to remove whatever bothers legal.

Reviews and Warnings
This section lists the sites where I found "negative" comments about the people and company, and/or the product. Some of the terms "sham", "scam", "scams", "flim-flam", "complain", "complaints", "rip", "rip-off", "fraud", "warning", similar words, and maybe just "review" were used in searching for negative comments.
WARNING: Be aware that some of the following sites may be attempting to sell their own or lead you into buying another product. If you consider their (or others') offers, at least do as much research on them as you would in looking for a new house, car or doctor before buying anything. Also, be sure to read and understand any company's Privacy Policies and Terms/Conditions, too. A "$$" indicates these sites.
There are few real "rip-off" reports on ITV Ventures... Remember, it's very new. Remember also that it's an MLM, and you are a "customer for life" of the person who originally wrote you up. While you can deal with the company, if that person was nasty or something to you, they will still get credit for your purchases, unless they haven't kept up the monthly fees, remaining active.

Legal Problems
ITV Ventures, as of 10/07/2007, have few, if any legal problems. Barrett has apparently had a number of lawyers go over every little detail, and now the system is supposedly patent pending.
However, Barrett, himself, ITV and ITV Direct (the infomercial production end), and Kevin Trudeau, as well as some of those whose products and services ITV Ventures is selling HAVE had legal problems. Barrett's and ITV Direct's troubles were for promoting and selling products that made claims which they could or would not prove, and Trudeau has actually been banned from making infomercials promoting brand-name health products, and has spent a stint in jail for credit card fraud, so he works around the former by writing books and interviewing with anyone interested, so he can get on TV. Also, it's been noted a number of places that Trudeau's book(s?) is/are not much more than long advertisements for his website, where most of the actual information is located, and where you must subscribe to get to it.

author, ex-con, and
co-founder of ITV Ventures™
Kevin Trudeau, as I said, has been in trouble with the FTC, FDA, SEC, and various other government agencies for various reasons. He served time in jail twice - for swindling a bank, and for cheating his own customers through credit card fraud. He and Barrett are leading the fight against the FDA to get natural products regulations relaxed, so they can make the claims they do without the required testing done by pharmaceutical companies. These products tout the "natural"-ness of their ingredients, and claim that since this is so, they CANNOT harm you.
Well, as I've said elsewhere, Nightshade, Poison Ivy/Oak/Sumac, mushrooms, rattlesnakes, black mambas, etc. are ALL natural, but they (ok... at least SOME mushrooms) can KILL you.
The products also combine items. Everyone knows that Timothy McVeigh combined diesel fuel and fertilizer and blew up the Murrah Building in Oklahoma. While I'm not saying that diesel fuel and fertilizer are used in these products, what I am saying that combinations of certain ingredients can be BAD for you.
And it's difficult to standardize "natural" formulas, because things grow differently. For example, in a strawberry patch, some will NOT be ripe, some will be OVER ripe, and some will be JUST RIGHT. And each strawberry has it's own subtle flavor differences, which means that each has different ingredients. Well, that's NATURAL for you. How can you standardize your natural formulas so that each capsule, pill, supplement drink, whatever is EXACTLY the same and will perform the same every time. And what about those that contain those "natural ingredients" to which SOME people are allergic?

Troubling thought: In Barrett's pre-launch video, he mentions that infomercials have made him AND HIS MENTORS millionaires. According to the BBB and MLM-TheWholeTruth.com, Trudeau is involved in Barrett's company, and Barrett and Trudeau are buds. They have worked and DO work together. From my research, it seems that Trudeau has an office in the ITV building, and actually was a FOUNDER of ITV Ventures. All that leads me to believe that Trudeau is one of Barrett's mentors.
While Barrett may have come up with a decent idea, even with it being for those "natural" products, having Trudeau as one of his mentors and a teacher of the MLM process is scary, to me. (And if Kevin was the one who came up with the idea, then Donald better watch his back! If they came up with it together... *shudder*.)
Conclusions
From my understanding... It will cost you "Premier IBO Business in a Briefcase [BIAB, below]: $499 or Basic IBO Package - $165.00"
The BIAB ($499) includes:
- information
- Natural Cures Newsletter
- A catalog of products
- A Selection of products (up to $619 RETAIL value - about $310, wholesale)
- Back Office (management center/internet)
- A "personalized IBO website"
The BASIC IBO Package ($165) includes:
- Refundable deposit
- Basic IBO forms.
Apparently, the $334 extra for the Basic IBO package is to cover the wholesale costs and shipping/handling of the products.
THEN it will cost you $29.95 a month (REQUIRED training program - MAP), at least $100 a month in sales or purchases (OAR), and $99/year to continue.
If you want to get into the In Home Agent program, there is a $49 setup fee, and $59/month to stay in it. In addition, there are various ways to buy your leads through ITV, which will cost anywhere from $2-$25 or more EACH. [Latter sentence from other sources.]
You GET:
- 100% profit on product (say, it cost YOU $20, you sell it for $40)
- $25 for each new member you enroll (your downline)
- 50% of 50% of the wholesale value THEY sell (35% commission, and 15% counting toward YOUR personal volume)
- $150 bonus on the products of each of your sponsored IBOs that buy the Premier IBO Pack (BIAB) [What if you only purchased the base package? What kind of bonus on the $165 package if they DON'T upgrade in two months?]
- PLUS a "Matrix Commission from 2%-8%, depending on your Level" (I believe each "level" is having 4 new active IBOs under you or your downline). ("Active" means meeting the monthly $100. PV qualification and the $29.00 per month MAP).
There are more considerations/possibilities for commissions.

Be sure to read the National Consumer League's A Consumer Guide to Dietary Supplements (PDF) and Naturally Misleading: Consumers’ Understanding of “Natural” and “Plant-Derived” Labeling Claims (PDF).
Something else to remember: PRODUCTS - When someone else signs up at $499 under you, you get $150 off the PRODUCTS being sold. There's about $600 RETAIL (around $300 Wholesale) products in the package. This means that on the wholesales products, you are making 1/2 in these packages. Since the company still must make a profit, the products cost THEM less than $150 per package. Heckuva markup, huh? From way under $150 to manufacture to $600 retail? DA-E-AMN!
So, if you can afford:
- the $499 BIAB OR the $165 Basic IBO Package (which requires other fees - see OAR, below - for the FIRST month, but can be upgraded to the BIAB within two months)
- the $29/monthly fee
- the $99/yearly fee
- the potential $100/month OAR (if your wholesale sales do not reach that amount for a month)
- the shipping and handling on products YOU buy (required or not)
- and if you want to become an In-Home Agent:
- $49 setup fee
- $59/monthly fee
- $2-$25 or more for EACH lead
- seminar and convention expenses (for those IBOs not in the higher levels)
AND, you:
- are a decent/good telephone salesman who can follow scripts
- don't mind selling people the products sold by ITV (books on natural cures, and "natural" products as of this writing - more promised. NOTE: You should be willing to buy and TRY the products yourself)
- are willing to sell people on selling the business as you were
- are willing to WORK (you will have to take calls from potential customers both for products and the business, and from those you recruit as your downline, and MAKE calls for the cheaper in-home leads, though they are to be to people interested in natural products)
- are willing to "work for" (it will be argued that IBOs "work for" themselves, but really... Think about it) Donald Barrett, Kevin Trudeau, ITV, and the product manufacturers, who may include others listed on this site on other pages
- are willing to risk the scrutiny caused the business by the founders' legal problems, negative BBB reports on the companies, and reviews and opinions of naysayers noted above
then it might work for you.
As always, this page contains my opinion and information I have researched and would give to family and friends who asked me about this infomercial/"opportunity". DO NOT take just my word for it. Check out all the links on this page, and do your own research.
Good luck... I can't afford to even get started in it, nor am I sure about Barrett, Trudeau, many of the formulators/manufacturers, or the products.
NOTE: ALL of the above costs are much less expensive than
becoming a retail franchisee, and you SHOULD be able to do
all or most of it at home. But, I won't even try to GUESS what your phone bill
will be... ![]()
