NRPI Responses (2)

Page last updated 07/22/2007

This page contains correspondence about my NRPI (National Recreational Properties, Inc.) page

Well, it's happened. Someone emailed me telling me that my page on NRPI contained some "misleading" points. However, they asked me to "interview them" rather than sending me an email with the "misleading points" and their refutation of them. I guess they don't like to put this type of thing into writing, even if it IS just a webpage like mine.

I also don't know why they are even that interested. Yes. I get a number of hits from people researching NRPI and their claims. But at this time (07/22/2007), I get a TOTAL of around 400 hits a week (based on my Sitemeter report), and only a handful of them are about NRPI and their associated companies (simply NRPI on the rest of this page).

Anyway, here are the emails I received and my response to them. If/When I get a response to my response, I will place it here.

Dear bill,

I just finished checking out your information about NRPI and found it very interesting.

I live in Ocean Shores,WA. When I first encountered NRPI I also thought it was a bit of a scam.

I worked for NRPI about 3 yrs. Both at ocean shores and also at Anderson island. The more I observed while at the company the more I realized it was no more out of line than any other sales operation (cars, furnature, electronics)or anything else. I do see things in your web site that are misleading.

I am sure you can find some people that think they were cheated and I think you might find they also feel cheated at most everything they do, you shouldn’t let bad judgment on your part seem like a rip off from someone else.

If you would like to interview me and go over things in more detail I would be happy to help you out.

By the way, when I left the company I was an unhappy employee, but I was also still objective.

Just in case my e-mail address didn’t come through…….<name removed> @ yahoo.com

Thank you,

Hmmm... Apparently, he doesn't want me to respond to his "normal" email address. Wonder why?

Of course, a lot flashed through my mind, but, after reviewing the page again, I decided to ignore it.

hi there,

i have went over you web page about nrpi and i do think you are a bit misleading on many of your thoughts.

i am a past employee of nrpi and worked on the ocean shores and anderson island projects. i also would like to point out that when i left the company it wasn't under the best terms.

i would be more than happy to do an objective interview with you about what you have put on your web page about nrpi, just contact me and we can set something up.

later,
<same former employee-name removed>

Ok... It looks like ignoring him was not the right option... I will be emailed again and again until I respond. So ...

Dear <name removed>,

First of all, I'm not an interviewer. If you believe I was misleading on some of my thoughts, please just send an email refuting the remarks (which, to me implies you give me permission to use your comments on my website) and permission to use your name and association with the company. I will quote your email directly, either at the points you say I'm misleading on, or on the responses page, with references from the "misleading" parts to the points you are making.

Second of all, I have reviewed that page a number of times. I have said, time and again, on that page and others, including both disclaimers, that I am not a lawyer or real-estate professional, and the suggestions/opinions I give are what I would give to family and friends, based on my research. I give links to positive and negative (admittedly, mostly negative) reviews, and to as many of the infomercial products' sites I can find. I quote some of the articles and things I found in my research, and, again, make my conclusions and opinions from ALL of my research.

In my General Disclaimer, linked through the Disclaimer link at the top of all the Shams/Infomercial Info pages, I state:

I do not plan on removing any page from this site. If you are a person mentioned, or the owner, president or operator of any company mentioned, and wish to point out any errors in my reviews or on any page whose link I provided, please do so by email, and I will attach them to the review on a feedback page.

I have NO CONTROL over content that's NOT hosted on Orange Frog Productions sites.

In the Disclaimer link, I state:

This site was developed so you, yourself, can make an INFORMED DECISION on any products you wish to pursue.

I have provided links to at least the main, and sometimes other related sites for the products, themselves, and have already explained that while it's pretty easy to find plenty of sites that say positive things about them, it sometimes takes a few search result pages to find the negatives. The idea of THESE pages is to make finding SOME of the latter easier, and explain why I don't find the products appealing for myself, relatives or friends.

On my main Shams/Infomercial Info [Home] page, I state in the 20070707 update, the "To the Gurus" section, I state:

"... simply refute the negative claims yourself, AS YOURSELF. And be sure to instruct your employees and people defending you NOT to resort to their own negativity and name-calling in these forums, as it just makes you and/or your product look worse. Simply "extol the virtues" of your product, PROVE your guarantee ..."

As a "past employee of nrpi ... [who] when i left the company it wasn't under the best terms", why is this of interest to you?

Again, I don't do interviews on the phone or in person. It's too easy for someone to tell me something, I quote them, and they claim they never did say it. I find my information on the internet. I can usually differentiate between simply "unhappy" people, and those with a major "axe to grind" with the company, and try to state so surrounding any quote I use on my site. My opinions are just that, MY OPINION, based on what I read and know. If you believe my opinions are wrong (and be sure it's MY opinion, and not something I quoted from another website), please refute it by email. If I feel your points are valid, I may make a change. Otherwise, I will include your comments either within the page, at the part you are refuting, and/or in whole, on a feedback page.

Thank you for your interest in OFP and my making it better.

Bill Sanders

I'll let you know when/if I get a response.

End Notes

Thoughts evoked by the received email

  1. Misleading?

I looked the page over again, and could only find one section that might be a little off... I say a few things about the "three day waiting period", and the way NRPI could handle it, that may be incorrect, but I believe I say that with a "may" and "might". The point being for the reader to be careful, and read everything they sign.

I've stated in a number of places on this site that I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not an expert on real estate, business or anything else that may apply; that the pages in this section are to help people FIND those negative comments...;  and that any of MY comments are my opinions and just what I would recommend to family and friends based on my research.

  2. "I am sure you can find some people that think they were cheated and I think you might find they also feel cheated at most everything they do, you shouldn’t let bad judgment on your part seem like a rip off from someone else."

Let's break this down a little:

    1. "I am sure you can find some people that think they were cheated and I think you might find they also feel cheated at most everything they do ..."

Yes. I understand that there are SOME who feel cheated at most everything they do. However, "Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean that someone's not out to get you!" And, those types of people are few and far between.

Most are just normal, everyday people, trying to find a way to invest their money and have some fun in the process. Many are looking for places to retire, and very few have the money to spend not only an building their "dream home", but on paying a (probably) inflated amount on a piece of property that may or may not contain the utilities necessary and that may or may not be "close to amenities". (Please note: "Close" is a relative term here... 30-60 miles is "close" to some people, but "walking distance" or a very short "5-to-10-minute drive" is "close" to many others.)

PLEASE NOTE: I'm not saying NRPI would not work for some, but many of those who get "caught up" in infomercial sales-pitches, and want to research how valid it is, sometimes need it pointed out to them that SOME things on TV are NOT as they appear!

Remember people, it's a "SALES PITCH". NRPI spends a half-hour, using a fairly popular celebrity, on a commercial for a "rural community" (read small town-size) of however-many, with the majority of that time pointing out all the great amenities of the place and showing pictures of some of the "nicer" and fabulous homes in the area, but only spending about 30 seconds total in 2-3 clips showing the actual "entry level lots" being advertised, is not reality! It's a SALES-PITCH. I just want people to realize that before they decide they're going to "go for it".

This page, and others in this section, was meant to HELP PEOPLE MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS on whether they wanted to risk a LOT of their hard-earned money on purchasing something they may not quite understand, by providing the opinions I would provide to family and friends, and the links to other places and stories of people who feel they were not dealt with fairly, so they can get a better understanding of what they might be getting themselves into.

    2. "[Y]ou shouldn’t let bad judgment on your part seem like a rip off from someone else."

As the caveman says in the Gieco commercial, "Yeah... I have a response... Uh... WHAT?"

First of all, I don't believe I have bad judgment at all. I have the experience and knowledge to do research on many products and scams on the internet. And I have the capability of writing so (I hope) most people can understand. I would not want friends or family to be "caught up" in sales pitches they see in infomercials, but to find out if it's right for them. So, if people simply become more careful about what they see, read and sign in situations like this, I'm happy.

But just in case I understand what I believe was meant: In no place do I come close to suggesting that my opinions should be the be all and end all of a person's research. That's why I provide links to not only NRPI's sites, but to detractors, and I normally also point out if there are positive remarks on some of those detractor's pages.

And just to emphasize the point:

      TO MY READERS:

Please do not make a decision on whether anything you see in an infomercial is right or wrong for you, based on MY opinions and pages alone. I am NOT an expert, a real-state salesman, a lawyer, or someone running their own business. I'm just a normal, everyday person who understands how to find things on the internet, and I've provided the links to help you make YOUR decision. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE MY OPINIONS FOR YOUR OWN. Take what I say as partial advice, and keep looking around!

  3. Why would a disgruntled former employee(?) bother?

Most disgruntled employees I know would and could care less what happened to their former employers, and many would rather see someone "tear them down". (And TRUST me, I'm NOT the only site out there with what could be perceived as negative remarks about NRPI!)

  4. Why is he asking for an "interview"?

I'm not an "interviewer". Besides, without a tape-backup of any "interview" it would be too easy for them to tell me something, I put it on my site, then for them to sue me because they now claim they didn't say it, and didn't give me permission to put it on the page.

I've said, on other pages, that I will accept an email refuting anything on the page(s), and will include those comments either at the point being refuted, or on a feedback/responses page. PLEASE NOTE: These will be with (if given written permission in your email) or without (as above or first-name only) full attribution .

I hope my email response with the links provided, and End Notes, explain my position on these. Apparently, there will be cases where I will need to provide links to them, as apparently, some people don't read the whole section.
