All external links last last verified 08/30/2007

Items on this page were researched by Bill Sanders (aka LYAO Editor or "-LE")

Each item in question is in a white box and listed first, followed by it's status, links to my sources (where I determined the fact was right, wrong, etc.), and any comments I might have on the subject in a light yellow box. ;-)

Any short notes written by me on quoted material are in square brackets ("[" and "]"]

NOTE: All external links on this page open a new window.

Ok... Everyone's been receiving spam for some time, now. I had an email address which was clean for quite a while, but must have signed up for something with my main email address where it is "public" and not protected from spam. I have been receiving spam of all sorts, many much like the prior pages of examples (See Spam Examples w/Pics, Spam Examples (Text Only)), but some that ended up being Malware (See Malware - Email Example #009-012 (Card from Neighbor or School Chum) and Malware - More Email Examples (Greeting Card or Postcard and more)).

Here are some links for this page, so you can see just SOME of the spam I've been getting:

  1. Penny Stock Notices
    (No... I don't invest in Penny Stocks);
  2. Software
    (Why would I buy cheap software - probably stolen - from spammers? 1) how do I know it's good and the same? 2) how do I know there's not a virus installed in it somewhere? 3) Spam is Crap, anyway...)
  3. Male Enhancement Products
    (Never looked for 'em! Been told I don't need them! smiley - winky)
  4. Pharmaceuticals (Drugs)
    (I would NEVER order drugs from a Spammer! Would you?)
  5. Loan Offers
    (I get enough of these - and better - offers in snail mail. Why would I get a loan from someone who spams me?)
  6. Replica Watches
    (I have a watch... Don't need one that LOOKS more expensive, and besides, I want one that WORKS).
  7. Education/Degree
    (No... I don't want a degree from an unaccredited college or university. I would also want the schooling too. And, while it'd be nice if I could get a degree for the years I've worked and experience I've gained, I EXPECT to be tested (FOR REAL) to earn it.)
  8. Customer Service Notice
    (The addresses to which these emails came are not ones I typically use for bills or other subscriptions. Therefore, it's surprising to me to receive "customer service" statements and notices there. Obviously spam, and spam is crap!
  9. Girls, Girls, Girls
    (One of the main reasons for spam, originally, anyway... to get guys to visit the porn sites. Now, individual girls have their own sites, and some are from them. By the same token, the chance of downloading a virus or trojan horse by getting someone to sign up for what appears to be porn (soft- or hard-) is probably much better than many of the other lures!)

Note that sometimes the subject doesn't match the message? They try to make the subject compelling enough for you to even look.

[I very recently cleaned out my emails and emptied the trash. I didn't realize that these were for the same stock until I pasted them here. Even so, this is the basic format for text Penny Stock notices.]

Note: This was received on a Wednesday. The second talks about news being released on Friday? Insider Trading? I guess it COULD be analysis and knowledge that there will be very upbeat news on Friday.

But still... This was Spam and most Spam is Crap!

Also note that recently, spam has been sent as PDFs. It should be impossible to catch a virus from a PDF, but the extension MUST be "PDF". Remember that those who send viruses sometimes put double-extensions on their attachments, with the REAL extension being spaced far out to the right (sometimes completely off the screen).

In the above, the blue, unhighlighted text was white on a white background, meaning it was invisible in the email. Why? I'm not sure, unless it was to attempt to mask the word or number they are against, which could be used in email filters to trash spam like this. If you suspect something like this and want to see it, simply "select" the text of the email. If the selected part of the line goes further than a space or so after a word, they've used hidden text.

I'm not sure why, unless the ad was originally an image.

Comment(s):

I have received NUMEROUS copies and versions of these emails. The subject is slightly different each time, and most have that line about not caring about my credit score, credit report, credit history, credit, etc. that varies, too.

Most say "Thank you", as if I've asked them for information or a loan. And, apparently, I have my choice of loans (the $ amounts vary!)

I also just noticed that all the phone numbers (at least on my current crop of emails) are the same.

I'm sure there will be hard-sell, low rate to start ballooning to very high interest rate quickly and for little/no reason, and, they (or their agents) used spam to get this offer to me!

Comment(s):

Obviously, the advertiser (if they know anything about the use of spam) knows nothing about advertising. The sentences all run together, the wording sucks, etc. Do they really get people wanting to buy watches this way? If so, shame on the buyers. Go to a local jeweler, discount store, etc., and keep your money in your community. Spam is Crap. Remember that.

Comment(s):

Hmmm... Again, I didn't notice that the phone numbers were the same until I put them here.

However, the first one comes from Denmark (DE) and the second from Italy (IT). Why are they advertising this degree mill with an American (270 is KY) phone number?

And, than @ ingrossocartucce.it apparently screwed things up. My guess is he/she saved it as a draft a couple of times, pasting itself into itself at least once, and resaving it for some reason. (My guess is he was making a copy of the message to send it out to another 300+ email addresses, and didn't realize that the BCC was copied. Yes... One of those addresses is the one to which I received this email.

It also appears he/she screwed up faking the email headers, and part of them appear at the bottom. A telephone number is NOT an email address (not sure of the form in Italy - In America it would be 9-999-999-9999. An IP is NOT an email address... It should be in the form of 999.999.999.999. The others I'm not sure of, but I doubt they ALL are email addresses.

I wonder if the Staff of "cartucce" double check spam emails? Nah! Why? Who cares, as long as some suckers answer!

Maybe THAT'S why he/she was saving it as a draft - To change the email headers. Who knows?

Cialis and Viagra are made by different companies, and you would most likely only order one OR the other. Obviously, I don't know for sure, and have never ordered anything from this company. So how can I be a "valued customer"?

Now, I'm hoping that Suzie_Woody@churchgate.com is either a made up, stolen or spoofed email address. For the product(s), "Woody" COULD be. But the Churchgate.com part is what worries me! smiley - winky

This one came to my main email address, which was NEVER used back when I visited porn sites (a long time ago! Most were FREE then!)

Apparently, the porn industry has decided it's ok to start spamming any email address they run into. What if this were a kid's email address? A teen's?

Hi sugar

Have not heard from you for ages!
Have you forgotten about me? Hope not!

How are things going?

I am stilll single and spring has come.. all of my friends are hanging out with their boyfriends and I am alone L
Though we might get to know each other better and perhaps this Spring will be the last lonely spring for us?

I have registered my profile at http:// singelladiesinfo .cn/?idAff=67 - why don't you come and see my new photos? And perhaps even email me..

Will be waiting.

Comment(s):

Of course, this is another spam email, that makes it seem like I know the sender.

What's really scary about this one is that it was SENT from a Ricardo Burris (obviously a male name - yes, I know it doesn't match the underlying email address) and it starts out with "Hi Sugar"! Doesn't really matter because it's spam and all spam is crap, but GEEZE!

Again, this came to to my main email address.

There is the possibility that this type of spam could also be a front for a prostitution ring... or a police sting. Then again, THIS one has a link to a Chinese (CN) website. BE AWARE: There are MANY foreign sites like this that will tempt you to meet girls online. The idea is to eventually get them into the US by marriage, where most will be able to "ply their trade" for more than they can get at "home".

This is like Tactic #2 of my Malware - More Email Examples (Greeting Card or Postcard and more) page. "The suggestion is possible salacious pictures! This is as bad as the MySpace spammers! The idea is to catch the curious." Of course, we KNOW better now, right?

End Notes

Keep repeating to yourself:

Spam is Spam and Spam is CRAP

The idea of spam is to get people to specific websites, to call specific phone numbers, or to write to specific addresses.

  • Sometimes they are legitimate sites, with legitimate advertisers, who know little to nothing about how certain agencies are getting people to their sites (by spam).

  • Sometimes, they will be people who are actually paid to get a certain number of "hits" per hour, day, week, month, year, whatever. (Wish I knew how to get paid for hits without advertising on my site!)

  • Sometimes they will be attempting to get you to download software that will do bad things to your computer. (See OFPv2/SSFF - Malware (Viruses, Adware, Spyware) Home and its links.)

  • Sometimes they are simply innocuous emails that mean and do nothing. (Usually teenagers playing around, sometimes learning the ropes of spamming.)

Be VERY careful about clicking on emails that you get "out of the blue". And be sure to check out my Scams Subsection Home, for examples of just SOME of the many scams spammers will tempt you with to get your personal information.
